Grants of $2,500 to Alabama high schools for initiatives that will enhance art and athletic programs. The purpose of the grant is to increase student participation in extracurricular arts and athletics programs at local high schools. Two types of grants are available for funding.

1) Arts Grants

Arts grants can be used to increase participation for an existing fine or performing arts program, offer a new arts program or enhance or upgrade supplies or equipment.

Examples of permitted uses include:

- The purchase of new uniforms for dance teams or choirs
- Purchase of equipment such as instruments for new band members, or production equipment not previously available at the school
- Significant reduction of annual fees as a way to increase enrollment in an arts program.

2) Athletic Grants

Athletics grants can be used to offer a new sport, offer a new team in an existing sport or increase the number of students carried on the roster of an existing team.

Examples of permitted uses include:

- The purchase of sport-specific equipment and/or uniforms for the new teams/new players
- The payment of a coaching supplement for the new team
- Payment of expenses for the new team, such as referees, umpires and tournament entry fees
- Improvements to a sports venue that increase its capacity for handling new teams

The athletic grants also can be used to significantly reduce participation fees for existing teams as a way of increasing participation.

Up to 18 grants for arts and up to 18 grants for athletics.

Alabama high schools may apply.

Schools need to be in the Alabama Power service territory to qualify.

The grant program is limited to schools that are determined to have an overall financial need. For purposes of this program, a school is determined to have a financial need if 50 percent or more of its full-time students receive free or reduced-price lunches.

To apply for the athletic grant, a participating school must be a member in good standing with the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA).

Grants recipients will be announced in December.
