Awards of $10,000 to USA youth, who are military dependents, and exhibit extraordinary leadership and character in the face of a challenging family life with the military. All nominees must be between the ages of 8 and 18. In addition to the cash prize, awardees will also receive a laptop computer and other donated gifts and will be flown with a parent or guardian to Washington, D.C. for the gala, during which senior leaders of each branch of service will present the awards.

The average Military Child of the Year Award Nominee:

- Has moved five times or more.
- Experienced at least one parent deploy for 18 months or more.
- Volunteered with service groups an average of 75 hours during the year.
- 17% have a sibling in the Exceptional Family Member Program.
- Maintained above average grades, often with honors.
- Excelled in sports, theater and/or music.
- Held leadership positions in school and community groups.



Nominations may be made by parents, other family members, teachers, counselors, coaches, community officials, church leaders, neighbors, and others. Anyone may nominate a child for this award, so long as the child meets the following eligibility requirements:

- Child must be a legal military dependent. Status confirmed by Military ID or DEERS enrollment form.
- Child must be between the ages of 8 and 18, at the time of nomination.

If the Veteran is a "military retiree", the child is eligible to apply. A military retiree is any member or former member of the uniformed services who is entitled, under statute, to retired, retirement, or retainer pay on account of service as a member, or who receives military retired or retainer pay.
