Grants of $1,000 to USA public libraries and school libraries in multiple states to enhance summer education programs aimed at disadvantaged youth. Eligible programs work with teens who speak English as a second language, are academically at-risk, or come from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. The purpose of these grants is to help libraries improve resources available teens who are vulnerable to summer learning loss.

YALSA encourages innovative proposals that are tailored to the specific needs of the teens in the library’s community. The $1,000 grant, made possible by Dollar General, is to be used to purchase resources or deliver services to help prevent summer learning loss.

Applicants must be within 20 miles of a Dollar General store, which includes locations in the following States: Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, DC, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.




Programs take place during the 2017 summer term.

To determine if you are eligible, you must answer yes to the following questions:

-Is your summer learning program administered through a library?
-Is your program open to all teens in the community?
-Do you work directly with teens?
-Are you a personal member of YALSA?
-Is your library within 20 miles of a Dollar General store?

Individual library branches within a larger system are welcome to apply.

Funds may not be used for prizes, food, or salaries.

Eligible applicants can apply now through January 1, 2017. Recipients will be notified during the week of February 13, 2017. An official announcement via press release will be released the following month.
