Grants to Virginia homeowner associations and neighborhood groups to enhance local communities in eligible areas. Funding is intended for projects to improve environmental wellness in the area's neighborhoods and beautify outdoor areas. Eligible proposals are those that benefit James City County.
The purpose of this grant is to enhance the sense of community and sustainability of local neighborhoods through the development and accomplishment of an environmentally sustainable landscape beautification project.
As a Keep America Beautiful Affiliate, the Clean County Commission has been working with community volunteers to identify new strategies in the areas of sustainable waste management, Placemaking, and beautification of roadsides and common areas. Grant Awardees are required to conduct a litter cleanup in or near their respective neighborhoods during the project timeline to ensure that local neighborhoods are “LitterFree Sites”.
Project Description: Sustainable / Communal Landscaping: Each community has unique individuals and needs. The purpose of this grant is to encourage community members to take pride in and responsibility for their communal space. Projects will focus on the physical aspects of common areas through the installation of native plants, erosion control methods, Placemaking for community members, and other methods to improve environmental quality and minimize negative impacts. Examples: community garden, entryway landscaping, trail improvements, communal compost, playground and pool area landscaping, energy-saving techniques, and litter prevention measures. Applications will be evaluated based on the benefit to the community, community involvement, sustainability (supporting healthy habitats, native plants, water conservation), implementation of environmental measures, and those minimizing water runoff.

Grants awards up to $500. James City County/Williamsburg Master Gardeners will provide free assistance in plant selection and sustainable practices.
Project must be maintained for a minimum period of five (5) years.
