Grants of up to $20,000 to USA and Territories nonprofit organizations, hospitals, local health departments, dental and medical schools, state government agencies, and dental societies for programs that provide dental care and serve as a Dental Home to needy children.

A Dental Home is defined as the ongoing relationship between the dentist and the patient, inclusive of all aspects of oral health care, delivered in a comprehensive, continuously accessible, coordinated, and family-centered way. Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children (HSHC) supports community-based initiatives that share this goal for children up to age 18 whose parents cannot afford dental care.

HSHC funds may be applied to cover costs such as, but not limited to:

- Child oral health care;
- Clinic supplies, instruments, and equipment;
- Salaries; and/or
- Education and/or outreach to recruit dentist participation in program activities.

All expense items must have clear, direct impact on pediatric oral health care and a direct link to the Dental Home.

While HSHC welcomes submissions from qualified applicants, special consideration will be given to initiatives:

- Supporting the age-one dental visit;
- Providing care to special needs patients; and/or
- Addressing the needs of specific underserved demographic groups.

Up to $20,000

All funds associated with HSHC Access to Care Grants must be expended within twelve months of award. Access to Care Grants for 2017-2018 will be issued June 2017.

Applicants must be a United States/USA Territory applicant/organization providing care to children in the USA or a USA Territory.

Qualified initiatives must be dentist-led, with priority given to projects with pediatric dentist leadership. Projects led by general practitioners also may apply.

Qualified applicants/organizations include, but are not limited to:

- Nonprofit 501(c)(3) or 501 (c)(6) organizations
- Local health jurisdictions
- County health departments
- Hospitals and clinics
- State government agencies
- Colleges/schools of dentistry
- Colleges/schools of medicine (pediatric and family medicine departments only)
- National, state, and local dental societies

- Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children does not fund indirect costs.
- The Foundation also does not provide funding to private practices or individuals.
- HSHC does not fund start-up initiatives.

Reviewers are well versed in the oral health care needs of children, so don’t bother providing national trends/statistics in your proposal. Instead, focus on your community child oral health care issues and needs, versus general child oral health care needs and statistics.

Grantees will be paired with an HSHC pediatric dental consultant for the 12 months of the grant award. The consultant will provide support and guidance to grantees.

Full guidelines are attached below (see the Supporting Documents section).
