Fellowships of $20,000 to New York City and Minnesota emerging sound artists and composers to support self-designed work and exploration in any genre of music. Fellows will be selected based on noteworthy artistic merit or potential. Funding will be available for unrestricted use during a one-year period.

Fellowship funds may be used to cover a variety of needs, including but not limited to living expenses, attendance at workshops and seminars, participation in residency programs, travel, equipment purchases necessary for creative work, rental of studio space, buying time from other employment to focus on music making, publication, recording, technical assistance (including legal counsel), healthcare and paying for childcare to make time for art making.

Panelists are asked to consider three and only three criteria:

1) The artistic merit of the applicant, as evidenced by work samples, resume, and letters of recommendation.

2) The conception of the fellowship plan. The review will center on the content of your fellowship activities, evidence of detailed planning, and your clarity in articulating the intended use of the fellowship.

3) The potential impact of the fellowship on the applicant’s longer-term goals. Both these goals and the connection of this fellowship to those goals should be explained in the Artist/ Administrator statement.

$20,000

The fellowship period will be for one year. Fellows may choose 12 consecutive months any time between July 1, 2017 and December 31, 2019.

This fellowship is intended to support composers and sound artists who are creators of new music in any genre or style, including composers who use improvisation. The fellowship is not open to performing musicians or singer-songwriters or lyricists who do not also compose.

Individual composers/sound artists are eligible to apply. A composer/sound artist whose principal body of work has been created in collaboration is not able to apply as an individual unless there is a significant body of recent independent work. Work samples and resume should clearly support this.
Applicants must be active professional/vocational artists.

Restrictions:

-Artists currently receiving Jerome Foundation support through the General program are not eligible to apply.

-Fellowship funds may not be used for tuition at degree-granting institutions to complete an academic degree.

-Individuals who are full time students at any level (from K-post graduate levels) at the time of application are not eligible to apply.

-While individuals may apply in 2016-17 to both the Fellowship for Composers/Sound Artists and the Travel and Study Music Program, no individual may receive grant funds from more than one Jerome Foundation program in the same fiscal year.

-Artists who are recommended for a Fellowship for Composers/Sound Artists will be considered ineligible for consideration in the Travel and Study program.

-Additionally, grantee artists may not apply to any other programs supported by Jerome Foundation, whether designed for individuals or offered through nonprofit arts organizations (for example, Jerome funds through the American Composers Forum, Jazz Gallery, Harlem Stage or Roulette lntermedium) until the fellowship year is completed.

The application deadline is January 26, 2017, 4:30 PM CST.

Grants will be announced by June 2017.
