Awards ranging from $2,500 to $20,000 to USA teachers in early childhood programs, elementary school preschool programs, or Head Start centers to improve their schools' nutrition and physical activity programs. These awards are designed to encourage preschool teachers to develop plans for creating practical, long-term improvements in the eating and exercise habits of students.
Preschool teachers are encouraged to identify their school’s nutrition and physical activity needs, to write a goal statement that addresses these needs, and to create a simple action plan that incorporates support from the community in order to meet this goal. Smart from the Start aims to provide educators and families of children ages 3-5 years with the tools and resources they need to provide their preschoolers with a strong beginning during the most crucial time in their development.
The Grand Prize winning entry will receive a grant in the amount of $20,000 to be used to improve the school’s wellness programs. The ten schools associated with the Second Prize winning entries will each receive a grant in the amount of $2,500 to be used to improve the school’s wellness programs. In addition, all awardees will receive a selection of books appropriate to the pre-K curriculum which are valued at approximately $1,000 (to be determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion).
The application must include information for all 3 Steps:
- Identify Need: Describe needs for both nutrition and physical activity
- Take Action: Create goals and an action plan
- Create Long-Term Change: Describe your school’s current needs, and how your action plan and the $20,000 grant will help achieve long‐term change and create healthy habits in your school.
One grand prize and 10 runners up awards will be given.
The winning preschool will be awarded $20,000 and ten runners-up will each receive $2,500. Plus, each winning school will receive their own prize pack of books valued at approximately $1,000.
