Grants of $4,000 to New York City K-12 public schools to promote healthy lifestyles for children and youth in grades K-12. Funding may be used to install infrastructure that will promote good nutrition and physical activity. Examples of possible projects for schools include the following:

-Creation of active playgrounds with painted ground markings, stepping stones, varied elevation and circulation paths

-Beautification of stairwells, hallways or outdoor spaces with murals or other art

-Incorporation of green space or gardens into indoor and outdoor spaces

-Installation of bike racks to promote biking

-Installation of bottle-refilling water fountains to increase student water consumption

Priority will be given to projects that:

-Illustrate high need and are dedicated to improving health equity in low-income neighborhoods (measured in part by the %students receiving meal subsidies)

-Demonstrate the capacity to implement active design projects

-Demonstrate the capacity to maintain active design projects (this includes project ideas that align with existing programming and/or curricula)

-Have established linkages and support from community organizations



The deadline for project completion is May 26, 2017.

This award is open to public schools in New York City serving K-12 students. Sites who received an award in previous years are eligible to apply again.
