Grants ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 to USA public middle schools and high schools in multiple states to support athletic programs. Applicants will be evaluated according to financial need. Funding may be used to defray the cost of operating programs. Examples of eligible expenses include competition travel costs and the purchase of new equipment.

Eligible States include Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Washington, DC, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

Schools may not receive this award in consecutive years.

The California Casualty Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grant program will consider grant requests for public middle and high schools whose athletics programs are in jeopardy and in great need of funding in all states except: AK, HI, MA, MI, NY, WI.

The grant cannot be used for individual student awards.

The applicant must be a current member, or referred by a current member, of the state NEA affiliate or one of our other participating educator associations including:


January 15 is the deadline for grant consideration in the current school year. Applications received after January 15 will be considered for next year's grant program.

Not all schools are guaranteed to receive a grant award. A selection committee will review all applications and determine award recipients and grant amounts. All applicants who submitted their application by January 15 will be notified of their status by May 30 of the same year.

Checks will be made payable to your school.

Grant Guidelines and Conditions:

To apply for your school, complete the online application form, or print, complete, and return the application by email, fax, or mail (see contact details below).

Applications must be submitted by an active employee of the public school for which the grant is being requested. Please advise your Principal and Athletics Director of your grant request. California Casualty will be in contact with them in regard to your application status.
