Grants ranging from $1,500 to $19,116 to Mississippi school districts to purchase new kitchen equipment in order to provide healthier food in school cafeterias. Preference will be given to schools that have a large number of students eligible for free or reduced meals.

These funds will assist SFAs in purchasing equipment needed to meet the new nutritional standards as required by the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, and serve healthier meals that meet the updated meal patterns, with emphasis on more fruits and vegetables.

These funds will make a significant investment in addressing the unmet needs in school kitchens by allowing SFAs to purchase the equipment needed to serve healthier school meals. This grant will put emphasis on more fresh fruits and vegetables, improve food safety, and expand access to participation in the school meals program.

The purpose of this grant is to enable school districts to accomplish the following objectives by purchasing new equipment for school kitchens:

1) Equipment that improves the safety and quality of food served in the school meal programs (e.g., cold/hot holding equipment, refrigeration, milk coolers, freezers, blast chillers, etc.). Standalone equipment ONLY; NO counter top equipment can be purchased with this grant funding.

2) Equipment that improves the overall energy efficiency of the school nutrition operations (e.g. purchase of an energy-efficient walk-in freezer or cooler replacing an outdated, energy-demanding freezer or cooler).

3) Equipment that allows SFAs to support expanded participation in a school meal program (e.g., equipment for serving meals in a non-traditional setting or to better utilize cafeteria space).

Standalone equipment must be purchased; NO counter top equipment can be purchased with this grant funding.

It is MDE’s intent to award twenty (20) grants to school districts.

Grants will provide $1,500 - $19,116.40 per item. There is a limit of 2 grants per district.

The grant period will be February 1, 2017 through September 30, 2017.

All current participants in the National School Lunch Program (including non-public) in the State of Mississippi are eligible to apply for the 2016-2017 Foodservice Equipment Assistance Grant.

Applications must be submitted by the school district on behalf of the individual school site.

Schools that have at least 50% of students eligible for free/reduced meals will be given preference.

Grant funds may NOT be used for renovation of the foodservice area because this falls under the category of construction costs which must be paid by the school district's general fund.

One application must be received at the Mississippi Department of Education by 3:30 PM on or before December 14, 2016. The application may include up to two (2) school sites within the District.

Schools will be notified of awards January 9, 2017.
