Internships to USA, Canada, and International university students and recent graduates to address environmental issues in Alaska. International applicants must be pursuing a degree in an American institution and be eligible to work in the United States. Funding is intended for students who plan a career path in conservation and are willing to make a long-term commitment to preserving and protecting the pristine environment and diverse cultures of Alaska.

Undergraduate students, graduate students and recent grads participating in this popular internship program are provided with unique opportunities to:

  • Learn firsthand about Alaska’s magnificent natural environment and diverse cultures.
  • Gain important, practical job skills in the conservation field while also helping the host organization meet its conservation program goals.
  • Help preserve and protect Alaska’s pristine environment by working with one of the many host organizations addressing important Alaska conservation issues.
  • Meet and network with Alaska conservationists, agency personnel, local Alaskans and other interns from Alaska and across the nation.
  • Become mentors and sources of information for other students interested in Alaska conservation issues.
  • Obtain college credit (if approved by an accredited university).

The objective of the Ted Smith Conservation Internship Program is to match highly qualified interns with host organizations, providing interns with practical job skills and an introduction to conservation in Alaska while also supporting the organization in meeting its conservation goals.

Selected host organizations receive a grant from Alaska Conservation Foundation to cover the cost of the intern stipend ($6,000). Alaska Conservation Foundation will also reimburse intern travel costs to and from Alaska up to $1,200 for those with intern positions outside Anchorage, $1,000 for those in Anchorage.

Term of Contract:

Internships are twelve weeks in length and will begin on June 1, 2021.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Alaska Conservation Foundation seeks applications from highly motivated individuals interested in furthering their education in conservation, environmental justice or closely related fields, who are willing to make a long-term commitment to preserving and protecting the pristine environment and diverse cultures of Alaska.

- Applicants must currently be enrolled in an accredited college in the United States or abroad; a recent graduate of an accredited college in the United States or abroad or currently enrolled in a technical program.
- All students enrolled in an accredited college are eligible to apply, however, preference for internship placement is given to college juniors and seniors, recent college graduates and graduate students.
- International students are not eligible to apply unless they are currently enrolled at an academic institution in the United States and are eligible to work in the US.
- Alaska Conservation Foundation is an equal-opportunity organization.

Applications for the 2021 summer internships will be accepted starting January 21 – February 22, 2021, at midnight Alaska time.

Host Organizations will assist interns in finding low-cost housing for the summer, but interns are ultimately responsible for their own housing.
