Grants to New York literary arts organizations to support capacity building and organizational development. Applications are invited from qualifying organizations that present high-quality work and require assistance to sustain or increase their institutional capacity.

Grants are available in the following categories:
-Organizations Receiving NYCSA General Support or Regrants and Partnerships Support
-Organizations Receiving NYSCA Public Programs or Book & Literary Magazine Publication Support

Eligible organizations will be given the opportunity to improve their managerial and financial stability; build solid foundations upon which to pursue their artistic visions; improve or institute development and planning initiatives that contribute to their sustainability; and extend program/publication reach to develop new audiences and readers.

Examples of eligible requests include, but are not limited to: consultancies, strategic plan creation and plan implementation; projects to improve program impact; software or hardware purchases or upgrades; and website development.

Proposals will be judged on comprehensiveness of the application; demonstrated value and benefit to the organization; and quality of the project concept, practice, development and context using NYSCA criteria for Artistic/Programmatic Excellence. Every effort will be made to ensure diversity of grantee awards in terms of region, stage of organizational development, size of organization and segment of the public served.

Criteria for Advancement Regrant Awards:
-Completeness and quality of the application and proposal;
-An organization’s level of self-awareness and its ability to self-assess;
-Artistic/programmatic quality and project potential to advance the organization’s work;
-The project’s demonstrated value and benefit to the organization;
-Service and potential for service to NYS literary field and the public, and, where appropriate, the potential for dissemination of project outcomes to the wider field;
-An organization’s ability to carry out the proposed project within twelve months of the award;
-For the $10,000 award only, an organization’s ability to demonstrate how additional funds will further work previously supported by Advancement; or
-How taking a new direction will advance the organization.

For Organizations Receiving NYCSA General Support or Regrants and Partnerships Support:

According to the budget your organization submitted to NYSCA for FY2017 or FY2018:
-Organizations with budgets of $80,000 to $149,000 may apply for up to $2,500;
-Organizations with budgets of $150,000 to $499,000 may apply for up to $5,000;
-Organizations with budgets over $500,000 may apply for up to $7,500;
-Prior Advancement grantees may apply for either the single $10,000 Advancement award or an award in keeping with their budget size as defined above;

For Organizations Receiving NYSCA Public Programs or Book & Literary Magazine Publication Support:

According to your organizational budget submitted to NYSCA for FY 2017 or FY2018:
-Organizations with budgets of $40,000 to $250,000 may apply for up to $2,500;
-Organizations with budgets of $250,000 and above may apply for up to $5,000.

Term of Contract:

Applicants must submit a project timeline demonstrating that the project can be completed in its entirety within the 12-month regrant period.

For Organizations Receiving NYCSA General Support or Regrants and Partnerships Support:
-If an organization receives a $10,000 award, it must wait two years before reapplying to Advancement. If an organization receives one of the smaller awards, it must wait one year before reapplying to Advancement.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Advancement Regrants will be awarded to New York State-based literary arts organizations that produce excellent work.

For Organizations Receiving NYCSA General Support or Regrants and Partnerships Support:
-Open to FY2018 NYSCA/Literature Program - literary publishers, presenters and service organizations funded through the General Support or Regrants & Partnerships categories.

For Organizations Receiving NYSCA Public Programs or Book & Literary Magazine Publication Support:
-Open to dedicated literary organizations funded through the FY2018 NYSCA/Literature Public Programs and Book & Literary Magazine Publication categories.
-Organizations must predominantly present public literary programs, or principally publish work in the genres of fiction, poetry, drama, or literary (creative) non-fiction and have as their principal mission to promote the creation, publication, and dissemination of contemporary literary writing, encouraging its appreciation by the general public;
-Applicant organizations must have at least three years of programming or publication history, and at least one paid staff member.

Please note: Advancement Regrants are not intended to support ongoing programs or supplement NYSCA-supported programs.

Pre-Application Information:

A 1:1 match is required for all grant types, 50% of which may be in-kind. The project budget must demonstrate secured matching funds.

The deadline to apply is April 25, 2018.

Award notifications will be issued June 2018.
