Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $5,000 to Darlington County, South Carolina arts-presenting nonprofit organizations and individual artists for arts and cultural projects. Applicants must contact the funding source before applying. For organizational applicants, funding is intended to support established organizations that have provided outstanding artistic achievement, service, and sound management, and to support small, pilot arts activities of new and developing programs and organizations.

- Performances and readings
- Coordination of arts events
- Workshops and artist residencies
- Services to artists and organizations
- Exhibitions Artistic and managerial development

Term of Contract:

For the December 15 deadline, projects must take place between July and September 2018.
For the February 15 deadline, projects must take place between October and December 2018.
For the June 15 deadline, projects must take place between January and March 2019.
For the August 15 deadline, projects must take place between April and June 2019.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Funding will be provided to arts-presenting nonprofit organizations and individual artists in Darlington County.

Nonprofit Organization Eligibility:

Applicants must meet nonprofit criteria such as being chartered in South Carolina as a nonprofit organization. Organizations may or may not be organized as exempt from federal income tax under 501-(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Service.

- Established Organizations - Groups and organizations that have provided outstanding artistic achievement, service, and sound management to distinguish themselves as established arts and cultural presenters. Most groups have their own fiscal agents and staff who write grants and pursue fundraising.
- Developing and Emerging Organizations - Typically smaller or younger organization offering professional and quality arts and cultural programming, but are still developing and structuring their organizations. These organizations may or may not have paid professional staff and are still defining the means by which they can achieve their professional goals.

Individual Artist Eligibility:

Applicants must be professional artists, or individuals who devote a major portion of their time to the practice and production of art through which they earn or endeavor to earn their livelihood. Recipients must live in Darlington County and be legal residents. These funds may not be directed toward tuition cost for an educational degree.

Types of Projects Will BCAC Not Fund:

- Deficits Tuition for academic study
- Contingency funds
- Purchase of long-term rental equipment
- Interest on loans, fines, or litigation
- Capital improvements

Note: There is a limit of two awards per artist or organization per year.

If you or your organization is interested in applying for a subgrant from Black Creek Arts Council, contact Allison Pederson (see Contact Information section below). You must contact BCAC before applying.

BCAC has four deadlines for subgrant applications.

Q1 Deadline: December 15 - This deadline is for projects taking place between July and September 2018.
Q2 Deadline: February 15 - This deadline is for projects taking place between October and December 2018.
Q3 Deadline: June 15 - This deadline is for projects taking place between January and March 2019.
Q4 Deadline: August 15 - This deadline is for projects taking place between April and June 2019.

When the 15th falls on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, the due date is the following Tuesday. If the 15th falls on a Holiday, the due date is the next business day.

When a grant is awarded, all project publicity and programs must contain the following statement:

"The cultural and artistic components of this project or program are funded in part by the Black Creek Arts Council of Darlington County, which receives funds from the South Carolina Arts Commission, the John and Susan Bennett Memorial Arts Fund of the Coastal Community Foundation of SC, and the National Endowment for the Arts.”

Required Match:

1:1 (Applicant: BCAC) for Grants to $1,000, in-kind may be used; 2:1 (Applicant: BCAC) for grants of $1,001 to $5,000, in kind may not represent more than 50% of the grant.

Example: Grant Award: $1,000 – Applicant must provide $1,000 in match with in-kind representing no more than $500. Minimum project budget is $2,000.

Example: Grant Award: $5,000 – Applicant must provide $10,000 in match with in-kind representing no more than $2,500. Minimum project budget is $15,000.
