Grants of up to $5,000 to North Carolina nonprofit, educational, governmental, and religious organizations for innovative programs that will benefit residents in eligible regions. Funding is intended for programs in the focus areas of education, health and wellness, cultural and natural resources, and people in need. Grants are for charitable purposes, including programmatic needs, equipment and technology, and capital needs. Programs should benefit residents of Black Mountain and the Swannanoa Valley (defined as the Owen School District).

Estimated Size of Grant:

Grants of $1,000 to $5,000; the Board may also consider grant requests for greater or lesser amounts.

Term of Contract:

Projects should be completed within one year of the award. Use of grant funds may begin on or after May 1.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Grants are made to qualified 501(c)(3), governmental, educational, and religious organizations serving Black Mountain and the Swannanoa Valley (defined as the Owen School District).

An eligible organization may only submit one application per year.

Grants generally do not support: annual giving campaigns, endowment funds, debt repayment, sectarian religious purposes, partisan political purposes, private primary and secondary schools (except for projects or programs that are not directed toward the school's students or staff and that directly address community needs) and private clubs, or activities taking place or expenses incurred before grant decisions are made.

Timeline:
- The application deadline is 5:00 p.m. on March 1. If the deadline date is on a weekend or holiday, the deadline is 5 p.m. the next business day.
- Funding decisions will be completed, grant awards announced, and funds distributed by the end of April.
- Use of grant funds may begin on or after May 1.

Applicants will be notified by email upon receipt of their application.
