Grants starting at $1,000 to Cerro Gordo County, Iowa nonprofit organizations and government agencies to enhance the quality of life for local residents. Program areas include arts and culture, environment, community betterment, education, health and human services, and historic preservation.

The vision of the Cerro Gordo County Community Foundation is to be a premier philanthropic program enhancing and impacting the lives of the residents of Cerro Gordo County through donor opportunities, endowment growth and management, and responsible and local grant distribution. The Foundation wants to help develop communities that people want to live in, as well as to benefit rural areas of the county.

Focus Areas:
- Art and Culture: Events and attractions that attract individuals from local and regional communities. You might see information about these places and events in a tourism book or a community calendar.
- Community Betterment: Projects that serve to benefit the entire community. These types of projects benefit many different types of groups/individuals within the larger community and county.
Education: Projects related to traditional educational settings including K-12 public and private schools, post-secondary institutions, and continuing education programs.
- Environment:Projects where the environment is the beneficiary of the project, including the rehabilitation of wild animals.
- Health: Projects that improve the mental, physical and sexual health of an individual. This includes projects that raise awareness about health risks and educational events about ways to overcome current and future health risks. Projects directed by hospitals, clinics or health centers that improve the quality of treatment and residential conditions are also included in this category.
- Historic Preservation: Projects related to preserving something for current and future generations. This includes structures, artifacts, newspapers, family genealogies, and other historical information.
- Human Services: Projects meeting basic needs of all people (biological/physiological, safety, social, esteem, and self-actualization). Also included are child care centers and public services such as fire, EMTs, EMAs, and scholarships/fee assistance for individuals.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Organizations must provide benefits to the people of the Cerro Gordo County and must meet the following criteria in order to apply for a grant:
- Be classified as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization or be a government entity. Tax-exempt organizations classified as other than 501(c)(3) are also eligible if and only if the project is deemed charitable; please contact the Foundation to discuss the project’s eligibility prior to submitting a proposal.
- Be current with all state and federal reporting requirements, such as filing of 990 forms.
- Must not have any past due grant reports for previous Cerro Gordo Community Foundation grants.

For groups, projects, or initiatives that do not meet the above eligibility requirements, the Community Foundation will consider your requests if submitted through a fiscal sponsor. Fiscal sponsors must be classified as a 501(c)(3) or a government entity. The Foundation prefers that the fiscal sponsor’s mission closely align with the sponsored project. Fiscal Sponsors will be legally and financially responsible for any grant funds that are awarded by the Cerro Gordo County Community Foundation.

Ineligible Applicants and Projects Include:
- Individuals
- Businesses/For-Profit Companies
- Inherently religious activities such as religious worship, instruction, or proselytization or activities that promote specific religious doctrine
- Associations for activities directly benefiting their members
- Requests for partisan political or lobbying activities
- Operational requests from other foundations
- Requests for support of fundraising

It is suggested that applicants, in particular first-time applicants, contact Program Manager Dotti Thompson to explore the appropriateness of requests and for any further guidance.

Applications must be submitted by 11:59 PM on April 1, 2019.

All applicants will be notified of the results of the grant process in mid-June 2019. Grant awards will be presented during a ceremony in early July 2019. Grant reports for successful applicants will be due January 31, 2020.
