Grants to Greater Houston Area, Texas nonprofit organizations to foster the development of inclusive communities. The information session is scheduled for June 6. LOIs are due June 23. Program areas include community engagement, combating human trafficking, refugees and immigrants, and community advocacy and research.

Program Areas:

1) Community Advocacy and Research - Efforts that support and complement the Foundation’s Civic and Community fields of interest.

2) Community Engagement - Community-centered change and civic education.

3) Anti-Human Trafficking - Education and outreach, survivor-centered care, and disrupting demand.

4) Immigrants and Refugees - Supportive services and legal advocacy.

The Foundation does make multi-year grants.

Requirements:

-Organizations applying for funds must be tax-exempt under sections 501(c)(3) or 170(c) of the Internal Revenue Code and be classified as a public charity under section 509 (a) of the Code;

-Organizations must be located in and around the greater Houston area;

-Organizations and agencies may request funds only once during a calendar year;

-Organizations must demonstrate direct impact on at least one of the Foundation's areas of focus;

-Organizations that have been previously funded must submit a final grant report before receiving additional funds; and

-Organizations receiving multi-year grants may not request additional funds until the grant has been paid in full and a final grant report has been submitted (exceptional circumstances will be taken into account).

-The Foundation does not provide support for capital campaigns or endowments. Funding for capacity building may be awarded as part of an operating or program request.

General Restrictions:
-Underwriting or contributions to luncheons, galas and social fundraisers
-Requests to support candidates for political office, political parties or PACs
-Requests for individual scholarships
-International organizations
-Major arts organizations
-Grants to local, national or international organizations' annual giving or holiday campaigns
-Grants to 509 (a) (3) Type III supporting organizations
-Medical research or disease-specific organizations

The Simmons Foundation funds faith-based organizations. However, the Foundation will deny funds to organizations that require clients to participate in religious worship or practices as a condition of service.

Additionally, the Foundation will not fund organizations that deny assistance, including access or comprehensive information related to family planning, contraception and abortion services, or discriminate based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

Applicants applying to the Simmons Foundation are encouraged to attend one of the quarterly information sessions to receive in-depth information and feedback on the Foundation's giving areas.

The 3rd Quarter Information Session for Civic/Community Grants is scheduled for June 6, 2017.

Civic/Community Schedule:

-June 6, 2017: Information Session. The Foundation will begin accepting Letters of Inquiry. Upon approval notification, applications may be submitted at any time

-June 23, 2017: LOI deadline

-July 21, 2017: Application deadline

-September 2017: Fall Board meeting
