Grants to Greater Cleveland, Ohio and Boulder, Colorado nonprofit organizations and government agencies to benefit eligible communities in the areas of basic human needs, such as health and medical, housing, food assistance, and crisis intervention. The Foundation serves Cuyahoga, Lake, and Geauga Counties. Funds are also available for programs in Cleveland, Ohio and Boulder, Colorado.

Applications will be considered for the following funds:

1) Higley Fund

The primary focus for responsive grantmaking is project-based support for basic human needs with a particular interest in food, housing, education/training, health, and crisis intervention in Cuyahoga, Lake, and Geauga counties.

2) Sally and John Morley Family Fund

Grants have a focus on the following geographical areas: Cleveland, OH, and Boulder, CO for 2017.

The Morley Family fund focuses its support on U.S.-based organizations striving to achieve significant systemic change in the area of mental health and/or at the intersection occurring among two or more of the following areas: education, health, the environment and socioeconomically disadvantaged populations.

Systemic Impact and Prevention Focus: Focus on organizations providing services or doing research that provide or enable long-lasting, systemic and/or prevention benefits to their target populations (i.e. solutions with long-term impacts rather than providing short-term necessities such as food and clothing) and organizations/areas in which the fund’s giving can make an impact.

3) Thatcher Family Fund

The focus is food, clothing, shelter, and medical care for the neediest people in the Cleveland area.

Higley Fund Grants typically range from $10,000 to $25,000.

Sally and John Morley Family Fund grants will typically range from $5,000 to $50,000.

The Cleveland Foundation makes most of its grants to tax-exempt agencies classified as 501(c)(3) organizations (public charities as defined by the Internal Revenue Service) in Cuyahoga, Lake, and Geauga Counties.

Some grants are also made to government agencies and churches.

Deadlines are March 1 and August 1. Please note that applications for the Sally and John Morley Family Fund may be submitted for the August 1 deadline only.

Once your application is received, a program officer or director is assigned to review your request and can answer any questions and provide guidance regarding the timetable for making a decision.

Grant applications that request significant amounts of funding, those that deal with complex or new programs, or those that have significant unanswered questions will likely require longer review times. In these cases, you should allow eight to 10 weeks for full review of your proposal from submission of the grant inquiry to decision.
