Grants ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 to Greater Houston, Texas area nonprofit organizations and civic and neighborhood groups for innovative health and human services programs and projects. A mandatory conference will be held on August 30. Funding will be provided for short-term projects or one-time expenses that will have a positive impact in the community.

For the purposes of these grants, the Greater Houston area includes Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, and Waller Counties.

A strong candidate for a Community Building Grant award:

1) Serves a health, community, and/or human service purpose;
2) Is a one-time purchase or short-term project;
3) Generates community interest and volunteer participation; and
4) Leaves a lasting, positive impact on the community.

Examples of projects may include: refurbishing a playground, cleaning up a dilapidated lot, painting a community center, constructing a ramp to allow wheelchair accessibility, or creating a public art project.

$1,000 - $10,000

Eligible groups must be nonprofit organizations that have been in existence for at least two years, including: neighborhood organizations, civic groups, environmental groups, scouting troops, schools, churches, fraternal organizations, arts groups, clubs, volunteer initiatives, membership organizations, and other similar groups.

All applicants must provide the most recently completed and filed IRS Form 990 Income Tax Return indicating that the organization named on the Community Building Grant application is a nonprofit entity. The 990 must have been filed within the last three years.

These funds are not designed to support ongoing social service program expenses, sponsor annual events, or fund capital campaigns. Examples of inappropriate funding requests include operating expenses, salaries, and consulting fees. Individuals are not eligible to apply for the grant.

Mandatory Funding Conference: April 3 and August 30.

The Funding Conference is a mandatory opportunity to learn the process and ask questions. Sessions are held from 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM at the United Way and only need to be attended once per calendar year, prior to submitting an application.

Note: This event is open to the public – organizations do not have to register. You must sign in at the conference as proof of attendance. Individuals who arrive later than 10:10 am will not be allowed to sign in and their attendance will not be counted.

Mandatory Funding Conference: April 3
Application Deadline: April 10
Notification of Award: Mid June

Cycle II
Mandatory Funding Conference: August 30
Application Deadline: September 6
Notification of Award: Early December

Applications must be received complete by midnight (12:00 AM) on the deadline date and will only be accepted through the online grant request system (e-CImpact) for 2017. Access and instructions for e-CIMPACT are provided at funding conferences.
