Applicants must be certified as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Foundation will consider a Letter of Inquiry from any nonprofit program or organization in Southern California.
During the Foundation's review process, equal consideration and due diligence will be given to all organizations - both those that are past grant recipients and those that have never received a grant from the S. Mark Taper Foundation.
For past grant recipients, there is a three-grant cycle ineligibility period, which is a three-year period of ineligibility.
The first step in applying for a grant is to send a Letter of Inquiry. A hard copy of the LOI with all attachments must be at the Foundation's office by 12:00 PM (noon) on Thursday, February 15, 2018. LOIs submitted by email or fax are not accepted.
Due to the high volume of applications, you are encouraged to submit the LOI as early as possible. Notification may take six to nine months. If any significant changes are made after submittal, please notify the Foundation.
Some organizations will proceed to the next step: Grant Applications. This Application will be mailed to the address indicated in your Letter of Inquiry during the months of April through June. If you receive an Application, you will also receive a cover letter indicating the date the Application is due at the Foundation office.
If you do not receivee an Application, it is unlikely your organization will receive further consideration during that grant year. Official notice of declination is mailed during the months of September and October.
Organizations are notified during the month of September if they will receive a grant.
Foundation grants, including multi-year grants, are only paid in December of each year. Please keep this timing in mind as you prepare a Letter of Inquiry or complete an Application.
