Grants to New Jersey and Pennsylvania nonprofit organizations in eligible areas for capacity building projects. Funding is intended to improve the operational, financial, organizational, and programmatic maturity of organizations, so they may more effectively and efficiently advance their missions.

Applications will be accepted from organizations that operate within the geographic region covered by the Princeton Area Community Foundation, defined as follows:

  • All of Mercer County
  • Southern Middlesex County, including Plainsboro and Cranbury
  • Southern Somerset County, including Montgomery, Rocky Hill andadjacent sections of Franklin Township (like the Griggstown area) 
  • Southern Hunterdon County, including Lambertville, West Amwell
  • Township and the adjacent parts of East Amwell Township
  • Northern Burlington County, including Bordentown and BordentownTownship
  • Eastern Bucks County, Pennsylvania, including New Hope, Morrisville, Washington Crossing and Yardley. 

What is funded:

Capacity-building grants:

  • Strengthening the board governance
  • Succession planning for board and staff leadership
  • Developing strategic partnerships and program collaborations
  • Strategic and scenario planning
  • Systems upgrades to improve service delivery and measurement
  • Embracing practices that support racial equity and inclusion
  • Supporting the strategic and capacity building needs of start-ups and newly
    launched initiatives
  • Strengthening Human Resources systems
  • Improving technology/communications

Multi-year grants: 

  • Proposals for multi-year grants focused on developing organizational effectiveness over a period of up to three years are also considered. 

Planning Grants:

  • A planning grant will be considered to help an organization evaluate the resources required to undertake a more comprehensive capacity-building project.

Estimated Size of Grant:

- Capacity-building grants are up to $50,000.
- Multi-year grants are up to $150,000.
- Planning grants are up to $10,000.
- All awarded grants will include an additional 15% for overhead costs.

Term of Contract:

- Capacity building grants are for one year.
- Multi-year grants are for up to three years.
- Organizations may only apply once per grant cycle.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

An applicant must have tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code, be a publicly supported charity under Section 509, and be registered with the State of New Jersey as a charity.

What is Not Funded:
- Services outside the above stated geographic region
- Operating support and staff salaries (new or existing)
- Building renovations, capital or endowment campaigns
- Fundraising appeals or event sponsorships
- Scholarships and individual sponsorships
- Field trips
- Sports activities
- Lobbying and other political activities
- Fraternal and religious activities
- Tax-supported and government-operated basic programs and services, such as core curricular school activities, and essential police and fire services

The Community Foundation supports projects that promote inclusiveness and that do not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, religion, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, national origin, disability, or any other characteristics protected by law.

The Bunbury Fund is now accepting Fall 2021 grant applications.

There are two deadlines for the Fall 2021 Bunbury Grant applications: Aug. 2 and Sept. 15

You must file your application electronically by 5:00 p.m. on the deadline date.
