Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $2,000 and grants of up to $5,000 to Ontario registered charities, educational institutions, municipalities, and hospitals in eligible areas to benefit local communities in a broad range of areas. Funding is intended for projects that align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Projects must benefit residents of Greater Sudbury and the surrounding area.

Community grants criteria:

  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Demonstrate innovation or potential to serve as a model for others
  • Reflect diversity and inclusivity
  • Develop local leadership or promote citizen involvement
  • Invest in the future
  • Build sustainability
  • Emphasize prevention rather than remediation
  • Encourage efficient use of community resources
  • Demonstrate a strong board of directors, fiscal responsibility, and sound management
  • Encourage project partners and investment from the applicant’s organization

Estimated Size of Grant:

$500- $2,000 or $2,001 - $5,000 levels

Term of Contract:

Grants are made to time-specific projects that are generally one-year long. Once awarded, SCF will not entertain additional applications for the same project.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The following groups are eligible to apply for Community Grants and SIPS Grants:
- Registered Charities (with CRA)
- Qualified educational institutions
- Municipalities
- Hospitals
- Not-for-profit organizations who partner with a registered charity

SCF will not fund the following:
- Capital campaigns or general fund drives
- Endowment funds
- Applications from individuals except for scholarships and bursaries
- Debt retirement
- Retroactive projects or expenses
- Projects that promote specific philosophical, religious or political doctrines or beliefs
- Charitable activities that serve primarily only the membership or purposes of a religious organization
- Attendance at or costs of seminars, conferences, workshops, tours, or travel expenses unless part of an otherwise eligible project
- School projects that would ordinarily be paid for by educational institutions
- Third party distribution to other charities

Pre-Application Information:

Timeline:
- Stage 1: Complete the Stage 1 Application Form and return it to the Foundation no later than March 1, at 4:00 p.m.
- Stage 2: Successful Stage 1 Applicants will be invited by the Foundation to apply for Stage 2, which consists of completing the Stage 2 Application Form and including the requested supporting documents.

Applicants are welcome to contact the Foundation to discuss the basic suitability of your project. Prior to your application (Stage 1 and 2) reaching the Grants Committee, the Foundation will assess each application for completeness and measured against the Grant Criteria. This assessment may include meetings and/or telephone discussions with the Applicant as well as consultations with other funders and informed people in the field.
