Grants of up to $3,500 to Kansas nonprofit organizations for the preservation and interpretation of local cultural and historic resources. Draft applications are due by April 27. Examples of supported projects include digitization, collections care, transcription, research, oral histories, hands-on training, and other creative preservation activities.

-Provide support for preservation and interpretation projects.
-Encourage the use of methods consistent with best standards and practices in the field.
-Increase public access to local and regional cultural resources.
-Strengthen relationships between organizations through the use of heritage consultants.

Using a knowledgeable heritage consultant and implementing acceptable “best practices” are the keys to successful projects.

Up to $3,500

Projects can begin July 22, 2017.

In-state nonprofits are eligible, except colleges and universities. 501(c)(3) status is not required, but applicants do need a DUNS number.

Organizations with an open grant from a previous grant cycle may not apply until the final report has been received by KHC.

Grant funds CANNOT be used for:
-Salaries for full-time staff employed by the sponsor organization
-The cost of publishing a book or catalog
-The purchase of equipment (shelving, computers, etc), website hosting, or insurance
-Archiving or digitizing of church bulletins, school yearbooks, county records, or newspapers
-Individual research, research for academic credit, or school projects. Students may be involved as volunteers.
-Purchase, construction, restoration, or preservation of a building
-Creation or purchase of a mural, memorial, monument, or plaque
-Out-of-state travel by project staff
-Food, beverages, entertainment, and promotional give-aways such shirts or mugs


Spring 2017
-January 26: Draft
-February 23: Final Application
-April 6: Notification by KHC
-April 20: Projects can begin

Summer 2017
-April 27: Draft
-May 25: Final Application
-July 8: Notification by KHC
-July 22: Projects can begin

Fall 2017
-August 24: Draft
-September 21: Final Application
-November 2: Notification by KHC
-November 16: Projects can begin

Applicants are asked to submit a draft proposal via email by the date indicated. KHC staff will review the draft proposal and offer comments on how to make the proposal more competitive for review by grant reviewers.

Final applications must be received by KHC by 5:00 PM on the due date.
