Grants of up to $30,000 to Pennsylvania nonprofit organizations in eligible areas to improve the quality of life in local communities. Applicants must contact program staff prior to applying. Funding is intended to address the impacts of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) health crisis, with priority given to applications that are pandemic-response/impact related. Eligible applicants serve Erie County.

Helping Today grants are awarded for:  

  • Program Expansion/Enhancement: Improve capacity through specific programs/projects delivering measured outcomes benefiting the community.;
  • Planning, Public Policy Advocacy: Advance a nonprofit’s mission through increased collaboration and organized attentiveness to civic priorities.
  • Communications/Marketing: Expand outreach, develop a brand and directly connect with donors and volunteers as an organizational strategy.
  • Technology: Upgrade technology that increases the nonprofit’s capacity to serve the community and meet its mission. Examples include: replacing hardware, software, and network resources.
  • Capital, Facilities, or System’s Needs: Improve, repair, or maintain a nonprofit’s facilities. Examples include construction projects, equipment or systems for improved access or safety.
  • Vehicle Purchase: Assist with purchasing a mission-critical vehicle.

Grants are generally limited to one year in duration.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Erie Community Foundation awards grants to nonprofit organizations defined as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Eligible nonprofits must be located within Erie County or demonstrate service to a majority of the population in Erie County.

In general, Helping Today grants are not made to:
- Individuals
- Scholarship Funds
- Fundraising Events
- Deficit Reduction
- Annual Operating Costs
- Government Funding Cuts
- Endowment Campaigns
- Municipal Capital Related Costs
- Sectarian Religious Activities
- Program Ads
- Reimbursements for Expenses Already Incurred

Pre-Application Information:

To submit an online application for consideration, please contact the Community Impact team to schedule a pre-application meeting during which a code will be provided for use in accessing the online forms for grant proposal submission.

Helping Today grants will be awarded on a quarterly basis with the following application deadlines and notification dates in 2020:

Application Deadline: January 21
Notification: March 20

Application Deadline: April 28
Notification: July 6

Application Deadline: August 10
Notification: October 9

Application Deadline: October 19, 2020
Notification: December 17, 2020

The online grant application form must be completed by 5:00 p.m. on the quarterly deadline date.
