Grants of up to $50,000 to West Virginia and Ohio nonprofit organizations and public institutions in eligible counties to promote health and wellness for local residents. A letter of intent is required prior to submitting a full application. Funding will be awarded to programs in the areas of mental health and addiction, healthy eating, active living, and thriving neighborhoods. Eligible counties are Athens, Meigs, Washington in Ohio and Calhoun, Jackson, Pleasants, Ritchie, Roane, Tyler, Wirt, Wood in West Virginia.

The Responsive Grants Program is a competitive grants program in which applicants can apply for project, capacity building, equipment or technology, small capital projects, or general operating support in support of the organization’s mission.

Priority Areas:

  • Healthy Eating, Active Living: The Foundation supports projects and strategies that prevent or manage chronic health conditions by promoting healthy eating and active living.
  • Thriving Neighborhoods: The Foundation supports projects and strategies that address improving neighborhood conditions where people live, learn, work, and play so that everyone has the ability to achieve their full health potential.
  • Mental Health and Addiction: The Foundation supports projects and strategies that address mental health and/or addiction. Related to mental health, the Foundation is interested in the area of health promotion and prevention. Related to addiction, the Foundation is interested in the areas of prevention, early intervention, and recovery support. The Foundation is especially interested in evidence-based programs.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Grant requests generally range from $500 to $50,000, with the average grant award being $15,000.

Term of Contract:

Multiple-year grants will be considered if you can show that the nature of the project requires extended time.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

- An applicant must be a tax-exempt nonprofit under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or a public institution.
- The project will positively impact residents in one or more counties of the Sisters Health Foundation service area:
- West Virginia: Calhoun, Jackson, Pleasants, Ritchie, Roane, Tyler, Wirt, and Wood
- Ohio: Athens, Meigs, and Washington

The Foundation is unable to make grants to:
- Endowment funds
- Individuals
- Organizations seeking retroactive funding for projects that have been complete or will be complete prior to the grant decision date
- Organizations that engage in proselytizing as part of their mission or programs.

Pre-Application Information:

The Sisters Health Foundation has two grant cycles per year. Materials should be submitted online no later than midnight on the respective deadline date.

Spring 2021 Cycle:
