Grants to Greater Birmingham Area, Alabama organizations to strengthen local communities. LOIs are due July 31. Applicants requesting capital or multi-year requests are advised to contact program staff prior to applying. Program areas include health and wellbeing, education, human needs, families and community, and arts and culture.

Successful grant applicants share these characteristics:
-Strong staff and board leadership
-Track record of sustainable operations and funding
-A commitment to working in partnership with other nonprofits and government agencies
-Broad base of financial support
-Proven program effectiveness

Types of Support:

In some cases, the Foundation will consider general operating support grants for programs that match the foundation’s priority focus areas. The Foundation also makes a limited number of multi-year and capital grants to organizations that can demonstrate broad community impact in one of the focus areas.

Focus Areas:

Community Health:

Good nutrition, quality health care, and positive emotional environments are vital to the health and well- being of children and adults. Many families in the Birmingham area lack access to healthy and affordable food and adequate health services.

The Foundation supports programs that:
-Expand and improve access to health care and healthy and affordable food for vulnerable populations.
-Encourage healthy behavior, improved mental and physical health and promote wellness and preventive measures.


Opportunity and success are dependent on a quality education and all students need opportunities to prepare them to succeed in school and work. The Foundation’s resources are targeted to underserved students to improve academic performance, graduation rate and job readiness.

-Promote school readiness and quality early childhood education
-Ensure students have reading and math grade level skills
-Provide youth development programs that offer mentoring and tutoring

Other focus areas include:

-Responding to community needs by providing basic human services for at-risk children and adults living in poverty or with disabilities.
-Improving the community by providing families with safe places to live, exercise and play.
-Bringing arts and cultural activities to all people to enrich lives, build community and fuel a prosperous, creative economy.

Multi-year funding may be requested.

Grants are made to organizations in the Greater Birmingham area for projects that meet the Foundation's focus areas.

Not Funded:
-Organizations outside the Greater Birmingham area
-Sponsorships, fundraising events or conferences
-Endowments or Scholarships
-Religious organizations for religious purposes
-Political organizations or candidates

If you are considering applying for a multi-year or capital grant, you are strongly encouraged to have a conversation with the Executive Director before submitting your application.

Inquiries are accepted by the foundation twice a year through the online system. The brief inquiry form asks for information related to your organization and project.

If your organization/program appears to fit with the foundation’s focus areas and guidelines, you will receive an invitation to submit a grant application online.

The Joseph S. Bruno Charitable Foundation staff will notify you after funding decisions are confirmed. You can expect a decision in about 60 days of the application deadline.

Grant Cycles:

-Letter of Intent Due: January 31
-Declinations Letters & Invitations Sent: February 15
-Applications Due: March 15

-Letter of Intent Due: July 31
-Declinations Letters & Invitations Sent: August 15
-Applications Due: September 15

The next Letter of Intent deadline is July 31, 2017. The next Application deadline is August 15, 2017.
