Grants of up to $40,000 to USA, Canada, and International nonprofit research and educational institutions to reduce the use of animals in scientific research. Funding is intended to develop methods of advancing scientific fields using non-animal methods. Preference is given to applications from United States institutions.

The mission of the Alternatives Research & Development Foundation (ARDF) is to fund and promote the
development, validation, and adoption of non-animal methods in biomedical research, product testing, and education.

Preference is given to proposals that:

  • Are from U.S. institutions or organizations
  • Utilize in silico and in vitro methods with human cells or tissues
  • Use pathway-based approaches as exemplified by the 2007 National Academy of Sciences report, Toxicity Testing in the Twenty-first Century: A Vision and A Strategy

Estimated Size of Grant:

The maximum grant is $40,000.

Term of Contract:

The preferred project period is August 2, 2021 to July 31, 2022, however, projects may start as late as November 1, 2021. All projects must be completed in one year (from the start date).

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Proposals are welcome from any nonprofit educational or research institution worldwide, although there is a preference for U.S. applications in order to more quickly advance alternatives here.

Eligibility:
- Non-profit, educational, and/or research institutions
- Research, testing, and education fields

Proposals will not be considered for projects that:
- Use intact, non-human vertebrate or invertebrate animals
- Use monoclonal antibodies produced by in vivo methods

ARDF funds may not be used for a principal investigator’s salary or salary supplements, tuition, or travel.
