Grants typically ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 to Southwest Idaho nonprofit organizations and public institutions for enriching and innovative projects that improve the quality of life for children and young people. Funding is intended for the focus areas of health, education, arts and culture, social welfare, recreation, and the environment.

The Whittenberger Foundation prefers to support short-term projects. It will consider long term projects which demonstrate a potential for matching funds or funding independent of Whittenberger funds.

In evaluating grant requests, the Foundation considers other financial resources and looks for grant opportunities where Whittenberger funds will make a critical difference.

Grants within the range of $5,000 to $10,000 are most common. With the exception of a limited number of continuing commitments, grants for amounts in excess of $20,000, are rarely made.

An applicant must be either a qualified public institution or an institution which has received tax-exempt status under Section 501 of the Internal Revenue Code.

The Foundation supports activities in the geographic region of Southwest Idaho. Applicants whose operations are outside this region have an additional burden of establishing the merits of an application.

The Foundation does not support the following:

- No grants are awarded for basic research, individual scholarships, endowment funds, fundraising events or campaigns, building construction projects, consulting fees or advertising.
- No grants are awarded to individuals for political lobbying, voter registration or political campaign purposes.
- No single recipient may receive more than 20% of the distributable annual income.

Eight copies of the grant application must be filed with the Secretary of the Foundation before the sixteenth day of August of each year. Applications received between August 16th and December 31st will not be considered. Applicants will generally be notified of the disposition of their requests in late November. Grants are publicly announced each year in December.

To conserve limited resources, the Board does not usually make more than one grant to the same organization within a twelve month period.
