Grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 to New Jersey nonprofits, libraries and museums, and government entities to develop quality humanities projects. Applicants must submit a letter of intent prior to submitting a full application. Funding is intended to cover the costs of planning, research, experimentation, and developing prototypes for new humanities programs and topics.

An Incubation Grant encourages you to set out a bold vision and see where it takes you. It might help you forge a new partnership or deepen an existing one, research a new topic or widen perspective on a current topic, talk to community stakeholders, or learn more about your audience. You might experiment with a new approach to a project or pilot a program.

Since these grants support projects in development, it is understood that preliminary ideas might change and evolve. You should explain the need you wish to address, your goals in starting this process, and how you plan to collect information. The most competitive proposals will articulate a vision, detail a plan, and commit to serving the needs of your identified audience(s).

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applications are welcomed from libraries, museums, educational institutions, social service organizations, historical societies, cultural organizations, and other community organizations.

The following criteria must be met to apply for a grant from NJCH:

- Applicant must be a registered nonprofit organization or government entity in New Jersey, with at least one year of verifiable public operation prior to application.
- Applicants may not have an open grant with NJCH during the proposed grant period (Exception: organizations serving as a fiscal agent may also have a self-directed project funded.)
- Ad-hoc groups may apply only as a co-sponsoring organization; an eligible organization must serve as the principal applicant and take fiscal responsibility.

NJCH does not fund:

- General operating support.
- Direct social action or political advocacy.
- Projects that provide academic credit, scholarships, fellowships, or regular course offerings.
- Scholarly programs directed to a limited audience.
- Arts projects that do not contain significant humanities component or perspective.
- Capital projects or the purchase of capital equipment greater than $4,000.
- Repayment of loans or debts.
- Fundraising activities.

Ineligible Costs

- Capital purchases or acquisitions of major equipment over $4,000.
- Food and beverages.
- Costs incurred prior to or after the grant period.

Also known as “administrative costs,” “overhead,” and “general operating expenses,” indirect costs are incurred by organization through the execution of its day-to-day activities but which cannot be attached to a specific activity. They are the expenses that keep the lights on, give everyone a space to work and the equipment they need, pay for insurance, and manage financial transactions. Indirect cost equations will vary depending on the organization; NJCH staff can help you determine an appropriate amount for your project.

Colleges and universities are not eligible to include indirect costs in their proposed budgets.
