Award of $15,000 and awards of $1,000 and $5,000 to Arizona pre-K through 12 public school teachers to recognize their outstanding contributions to the profession and to their communities. Nominees should be active or take a leadership role in their schools and communities, demonstrate a superior ability to help all students achieve, and have gained the respect and admiration of students, parents, and co-workers.

The National Teacher of the Year (NTOY) program is the oldest and most prestigious honors program to focus public attention on excellence in teaching. It is a project of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) in partnership with Voya Foundation. Each November, the new Teacher of the Year is announced for the first time at the annual Teacher of the Year Awards Luncheon.

Rewards:

Arizona Teacher of the Year (1):

- $15,000 cash
- Arizona’s candidate for National Teacher of the Year
- Meet the President of the United States (pending per each administration)
- One week at International Space Camp in Huntsville, AL
- National State Teacher of the Year Program Induction Conference
- Full scholarship to Argosy University/Phoenix
- AZK12 Center Scholarship (Complimentary Coaching Saturdays, Summer Institute, Working Retreat)
- Professional speech and storytelling training
- Participation in Fiesta Bowl Parade on APS fire engine
- Arizona State Teacher of the Year ring from Herff Jones
- Free field trip to the Arizona Science Center (teachers can choose to build a customized package that includes CREATE)
- Free professional development workshop at the Arizona Science Center’s CREATE (Maker Mindset: Learning by Doing or CREATE, Play, Hack: Game Design)

Ambassadors for Excellence (4):

- $5,000 cash
- Partial scholarship (50%) to Argosy University/ Phoenix
- AZK12 Center Scholarship (Complimentary Coaching Saturdays, Summer Institute, Working Retreat)
- Professional speech and storytelling training
- Participation in Fiesta Bowl Parade on APS fire engine
- Free field trip to the Arizona Science Center (teachers can choose to build a customized package that includes CREATE)
- Free professional development workshop at the Arizona Science Center’s CREATE (Maker Mindset: Learning by Doing or CREATE, Play, Hack: Game Design)

Five Semifinalists (5):

- $1,000 cash
- Partial scholarship (25%) to Argosy University/Phoenix
- AZK12 Center Teacher Leadership Institute registration
- Participation in Fiesta Bowl Parade on APS fire engine

One (1) Arizona Teacher of the Year; Four (4) Ambassadors for Excellence; Five (5) Semifinalists

- One Arizona Teacher of the Year receives $15,000.
- Four Ambassadors for Excellence receive $5,000 each.
- Five Semifinalists receive $1,000 each.
- All 10 finalists receive educational and professional development scholarships and opportunities at no or reduced fees.

- Spend the majority (over 50%) of the school day in direct instruction to students;
- Be certified to teach Pre-Kindergarten – 12th Grade (or combination) in Arizona at a state-accredited public school;
- Have completed at least four (4) full years as a classroom teacher at the time the application is submitted for consideration;
- Be a full-time teacher and plan to continue in an active teaching status through 2018;
- Not have been selected in as an AEF™ Teacher of the Year, Semifinalist or, Ambassador for Excellence in the past.

Teachers may self-nominate, be nominated by a student, co-worker, administrator, school or district committee, friend or family member to apply for the award.

To be considered for the award, teacher candidates must submit a written application that is reviewed by a panel of judges consisting of educators, students and members of the business community. Ten finalists are selected from the written applications. The 10 finalists are asked to prepare a 15-minute DVD teaching in the classroom. The final selection process includes review of the DVD, an interview and an impromptu speech by each of the 10 finalists.

Following that process, the Teacher of the Year is selected, four “Ambassadors for Excellence” are selected and five remain semi-finalists. All 10 are honored at the annual awards luncheon. The Teacher of the Year and Ambassadors have multiple opportunities during the year to make public appearances throughout the state, speaking to professional, civic, educational, parent and student groups.

Timeline

- March 2017 – Applications and nomination forms become available to schools and teachers statewide.
- 5:00 PM Monday, July 31, 2017 – Nomination forms are due online.
- 5:00 PM Friday, August 18, 2017 – Teacher applications are due online.
- On or before Friday, September 22, 2017 – Top 10 teachers are notified by phone; in-person interviews are scheduled. Teachers not selected as top 10 will receive letters at their home address.
- Late September, early October 2017 – Top 10 teacher interviews are conducted.
- Early October 2017 – The top five teachers (Ambassadors for Excellence) are filmed in the classroom.
- Tuesday, November 7, 2017 – The top 10 finalists attend AEF’s annual Teacher of the Year Luncheon where the 2018 AEF™ Arizona Teacher of the Year is announced. The videos of the five Ambassadors for Excellence are played at this luncheon.
- December 2017 – A day-long speech training session is hosted for the Teacher of the Year and Ambassadors for Excellence.
- January 2018 – Arizona PBS airs the annual 30-minute Arizona Teacher of the Year special.
