Rebate funding of up to $8,000 to Central and Northern British Columbia municipalities, regional districts, and First Nations to support grant-writing staff positions. The purpose of this program is to enable communities within the funding source’s service area to access more funding dollars in support of crucial economic development projects and initiatives.
Features and benefits of the program include:
-The rebate covers up to 76% of a grant writer’s wages for a minimum of 400 hours of employment for a grant writer position based in the local community each year.
-The program creates additional capacity to assist local nonprofits with grant application research and writing and to pursue community funding priorities.
-The program increases a community’s or nonprofit group’s success accessing financial grants to pursue its strategic priorities.
-Grant funding support generates increased economic development capacity for local governments and First Nations.
-Northern Development provides timely response to funding applications and rebate claims for communities and nonprofits that wish to access funding through the program.
-Interactive web-based grant writing training is available on-demand from Northern Development’s website to assist new grant writers throughout the region. The Trust also provides community grant writing workshops on an on-demand basis.
The following types of grant writing positions are eligible for Northern Development rebate funding:
-Dedicated full-time, part-time or on-demand grant writer (staff or contract position)
-Additional hours for an existing part-time staff member where the grantwriting portion of the job is at least 30% of the total workload. A copy of the job description specifying the % of time allocated to each of the combined roles must be provided to Northern Development to be eligible for the rebate
-A new combined staff position where the grantwriting portion is at least 30% of the total workload, e.g., grant writing/deputy corporate officer, grant writing/economic development, grant writing/planning officer. Who Can Apply:
-Municipalities / Regional Districts
Eligible local governments and First Nations must be located within Northern Development’s service region.
Eligible grant writers must prepare funding applications to agencies, foundations and government programs, and must be under the direct supervision of a local or band government employee or designate.
-Travel, relocation, office expenditures, and any additional salary or benefit costs (including CPP and EI) are the responsibility of the employer
-Salary or contract costs for combined chief administrative officer/grant writer, chief financial officer/grant writer, and band administrator (or manager)/grant writer positions
-Costs incurred in time periods outside the year approved for funding support
-GST and PST
The rebate covers up to 76% of a grant writer’s wages.

Funding applications are accepted for this program on an annual intake cycle. Applicants should apply for the following year’s funding starting November 1st of each year and no later than January 31st of the year applied for. Please note that there are a limited number of spots available each year.
Northern Development staff will review the application to ensure completeness, eligibility, and availability. Northern Development staff will contact the applicant within 30 days of receiving the application.
As the program provides rebate funding, applicants are responsible for financially supporting the grant writer position throughout the approved year.
