Grants ranging from $5,000 to $6,000 to North Carolina nonprofits, government agencies, and organizations for projects that promote and educate about shooting range activities, hunting safety, and responsible firearms use. Grants are generally provided in the form of supplies or equipment related to firearms programs and shooting range maintenance; however, direct financial support may also be available.
Grant requests must conform to, and foster the purposes in, The NRA Foundation’s Articles of Incorporation and mission statement. These purposes are as follows:
1) To promote, advance, and encourage firearms, the shooting sports, and hunting safety.
2) To educate individuals, including the youth of the United States, with respect to firearms, firearms history, participation in the shooting sports, hunting safety, and marksmanship, as well as with respect to other subjects that are of importance to the well-being of the general public.
3) To conduct research in furtherance of improved firearms safety and marksmanship facilities and techniques.
4) To support activities of the National Rifle Association of America, but only to the extent that such activities are in furtherance of charitable, educational, or scientific purposes within the meaning of section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code which includes activities that are charitable, educational, or foster National or International sports competition.
The NRA Foundation Grant may be used for supplies, equipment, and financial support to a variety of programs geared towards youth, women, law enforcement, veterans, disabled, and the general public, including:
-General Shooting Programs
-Education, Training, and Safety
-Hunting and Conservation
-Range Improvement Projects
Additionally, the Range Grant is offered for requests for permanent improvements to a facility, including but not limited to:
-Clubhouse/Classroom facility improvements
-Shelter structures/covered firing lines/pavilions
-Commercial-grade trap machines (See special note below)
-Any other permanent improvement to your organization’s property or facility
The NRA Foundation considers requests for certain trap machines to be range improvements. These machines are considered to be commercial grade and are designed to be a permanent fixture at a range (regardless of their portability). The following machines are considered to be range improvements:
- Club 275 ATA
- Super Sporter
- PRO ATA Set
- Trio Field Simulator
Other comparable machines to those listed above will also be considered range improvements.
Please note that requests for items such as portable shooting points, like those used by JROTC units for air rifle training, are not considered range improvements and should be made using the General Grant Application.
The NRA Foundation works with a number of industry suppliers to provide items needed to operate a variety of programs. In cases where approved requests fall outside of the Grant Product Fulfillment Program, the NRA Foundation provides direct financial support.
The average NRA Foundation grant award is approximately $5,000 to $6,000, depending on the State Fund.
This grant does not support multi-year projects. Requests must be submitted for consideration each year for that year’s costs.
An applicant may be an incorporated or otherwise state-recognized nonprofit organization, 501(c) entity, or government agency, and must possess a unique Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) issued by the Internal Revenue Service.
Applicants are not required to be members of or have association with the NRA to receive funds under this grant program.
If your organization is not recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) entity, the project or activity for which you seek funding must provide a public benefit equal to or in excess of the amount sought. For example, if you seek funding to conduct a Women on Target event or to support a youth league, both of which are open to the public, the public benefit is clear. Public benefit may also be shown by qualified groups benefiting from the project or activity. For example, a project or activity that provides a benefit equal to, or in excess of, the amount sought to the Boy Scouts, a school, a local law enforcement agency, a veterans group, a church, or other qualified groups may meet this requirement – a requirement likely easier met when your organization provides free access to such groups, as applicants for this program generally do. Similarly, projects or activities that further amateur sports competitions may meet the public benefit requirement. Please note, however, that simply being open to the public, and charging the public for use, does not provide a public benefit.
Grants may be awarded to members-only clubs if the non-member-only project for which you are requesting funding will provide substantial public benefit. Equipment granted for events and programs must be for the purpose of providing a benefit to the public. Range improvement projects must also benefit the public, usually via qualifying groups.

-Other organizations or groups that have not been assigned a Federal Employer Identification Number by the Internal Revenue Service
Ineligible activities or projects:
- Deficit financing (payment for something already purchased, work already completed or reimbursement for an event that has already taken place)
- Projects for commercial ventures, i.e., private businesses
- Projects that require membership in the NRA or in the applying club or group (NOTE: requesting organizations may be private or open only to members, PROVIDED that the project or activities for which funding is sought is open to the public. Documentation must demonstrate this public benefit to be eligible for funding.)
- Organizations or groups that have not submitted final reports for previously awarded grants
- Administrative fees, office overhead, advertising, or other similar charges
- Multi-year funding of projects. Requests must be submitted for consideration each year for that year’s costs
- Raffle items or prizes
- Landscaping or related equipment (lawnmowers, tractors, weedeaters, snowblowers, etc.)
- Duty ammunition for law enforcement (only training ammunition can be funded)
- Archery-only requests (archery programs may only be considered if they are part of an overarching shooting program OR part of the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP))
Applicants shall not discriminate against any member, person, or other user of its facilities or equipment on the basis of age, race, color, sex, or national origin.

Please note: Applications for range or club improvements must include three letters from benefiting nonprofit organizations such as the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H, FFA, law enforcement, ROTC or other military units, recognized charities, governmental entities, or other 501(c)(3) or equivalent organizations. The letters must demonstrate how those organizations will benefit from this grant and that the improvements sought are necessary and required for those organizations to continue to use, or get more use out of, the facilities.
