Grants and fellowships to USA, Canada, and International researchers for research that addresses the health and wellness of small companion animals including cats and dogs. Funding is intended to support humane and hypothesis-driven projects with strong scientific merit and the potential for significant impact on animal health. Applicants must apply through an eligible institution.

Grants are available in the following categories:

-Established Investigator grants are designed to provide funding for research by individuals and teams with a previous record of research and publication.
-Pilot Study grants are designed to provide funding for innovative ideas to accelerate discovery and advance MAF’s mission.
- First Award grants are designed to assist new faculty in establishing a successful research program.
- Fellowship Training grants are designed to assist new investigators in launching a successful research career by providing salary support in a quality mentoring environment. Funds for this award can be used solely for the fellow’s salary.

Feline Grants

The Foundation welcomes proposals on any topic that advances feline health. This cycle, additional funding is also available for proposals pertaining to:

- Prevention, treatment, and diagnosis of heartworm disease in cats.

Canine Grants

The Foundation also welcomes proposals on any topic that advances canine health. This cycle, additional funding is also available for proposals pertaining to:

- All aspects of heart disease in Doberman pinschers.
- Appropriate dosing of CBD-rich hemp oil used for pain management in dogs.
- Prevention, treatment, and diagnosis of heartworm disease in dogs.

Please note that proposals pertaining to these special areas of interest are still evaluated and ranked with the main pool of proposals.

Estimated Size of Grant:

- Established Investigator Proposals: There is no limit to the annual budget request, however the average award is approximately $50,000/year.
- Pilot study grants: The budget cannot exceed $10,800 ($10,000 plus 8 percent for indirect costs if charged by
your institution).
- First Award grants: The budget cannot exceed $54,000 per year ($50,000 per year, plus 8 percent for indirect
costs if charged by your institution).
- Fellowship Training Grants: The budget cannot exceed $50,000 (including benefits and indirect costs) per year.

Term of Contract:

- Established Investigator Proposals: The maximum study duration is three years.
- Pilot Study Proposals: The maximum study duration is one year.
- First Award Funding: The maximum study duration is two years.
- Fellowship Training Grant Proposals: The maximum study duration is two years.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Morris Animal Foundation funds companion animal and wildlife scientific health and welfare projects all over the world. You do not need to be a U.S. citizen to apply.

Applicants must apply through an institution that can enter into a legal contract (Grant-in-Aid Agreement) with the Foundation.

MAF permits a maximum of two applications as Principal Investigator per year.

Qualifications of Applicant: Established Investigator Grant
- All investigators are eligible to apply.
- Competitive applicants have a previous record of research and publication.

Qualifications of Applicant: Pilot Study Grant
- All investigators are eligible to apply.
- Preliminary data is not required.

Qualifications of Applicant: First Award Grant
- Must have a DVM and/or PhD.
- Must have a full-time, permanent position in a university, accredited zoo or conservation organization.
- Individuals currently in a residency program are not eligible for this award.
- Postdoctoral researchers should be completing their program and proposing research intended to be conducted in a permanent full-time position.
- Must not have received previous funding as a principal investigator or co-principal investigator for more than $20,000 for any single extramural award. Previous funding as a co-investigator is acceptable.
-Applicants must have the support of a faculty mentor in the applicant’s field.

Qualifications of Applicant: Fellowship Training Grant
- Must have a DVM and/or PhD.
- Must be a full-time graduate student or have a postdoctoral research appointment.
- Must not have completed more than two years of full-time postdoctoral research training on the proposed project.
- Clinical residents and other applicants with clinical service requirements are not eligible.
- Must devote at least 75 percent of their time to the funded research.
- Applicant must have the support of a faculty mentor in the applicant’s field.

The Foundation cannot accept submissions from individuals.

Budget Limitations:
1. Equipment: Requests for equipment purchases may not exceed $5,000.
2. Tuition: MAF does not pay for tuition.
3. Salary:
- Full-Time Faculty: Salary requests will not be approved.
- Less than Full-Time Faculty: Salary requests are permitted and must be clearly defined and must include percent appointment and other current salary support.
- Technicians, Residents, Fellows, and Students: Salary requests are permitted but must be clearly defined and must include percent time commitment.
4. Travel: Travel expenses required to complete the project should be clearly justified. Requests for travel to scientific meetings may not exceed $3,000.
5. Indirect costs: MAF allows up to 8 percent of the budget to be applied to indirect costs, if your institution charges for these costs. Where a sub-award to another institution is proposed, the total indirect costs may not exceed 8% of the total budget.

Projects oriented toward human health and agricultural animal health do not fall within Morris Animal Foundation's mission and will not be accepted.

The Foundation does not award grants to fund the costs of administration, training programs, educational outreach or operational structure of animal shelters, rehabilitation centers, wildlife sanctuaries, etc.

Pre-Application Information:

Proposals are due Wednesday, March 13, 2019, by 11:59 p.m. EST. MAF grant applications have two components: an online form and a full proposal attachment. Applications must be received by 11:59 PM EST on the designated due date.

If a proposal does not advance to full review, applicants will be notified approximately three months after the proposal submission deadline.

If a proposal advances to full review, applicants will receive a written review by the Scientific Advisory Board, along with a notification of funding status, approximately five months after the proposal submission deadline.

A proposal that is not approved for funding can be re-submitted a maximum of two times (three total submissions to MAF).
