In-kind grants valued at an average of $58,000 to California, Illinois, and New York City nonprofit organizations and public schools within the funding source’s service areas for pro bono consulting. This program provides organizations with tangible tools to get more funding, deliver better programs, and develop a high-performance organization.
Taproot Team Projects:
This new program pairs you with a team of 4 - 6 pro bono consultants for a 12 - 15 week project fully customized to address your organization's most pressing infrastructure challenge.
Applications are invited from organizations working within one of the following issue areas:
-Arts - Providing leadership or education in the art community, while making the arts more accessible to everyone.
-Education - Strengthening the public education (preK and K-12) system or enhancing the educational success of students.
-Environment - Preserving and restoring the environment or caring for animal welfare.
-Health - Improving people's physical or emotional health.
-Social Services - Providing social services to those who have been unable to participate fully in the social and economic life of the community. Services usually target children and families, employment and training, the elderly, immigrants, the disabled, housing and homelessness or foster and adoption services.
Institutional Strength and Readiness:
In addition to the basic criteria, the Foundation also reviews an organization's readiness to take on a Taproot Team Project:
-Institutional Strength and Stability — Taproot seeks organizations with healthy finances, strong mission and programs, proven results and stable staff.
-Fitness for the Program - Organizations need to demonstrate a clear need for the Taproot Team Project.
-Readiness for the Program - Readiness includes sufficient board and staff time for the Taproot Team Project, a good decision-making structure, and internal resources to execute the work.

Organizations will receive professional services valued at an average of $58,000 for each project.
The program will provide consultants for a 12-15 week project.
Project dates are May - August 2018 (February 2 deadline); July - October 2018 (April 6 deadline); and September - December 2018 (June 1 deadline).
To be eligible for a Taproot Team Project, an organization must be headquartered in one of Taproot’s service areas:
-Chicago — Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry or Will counties
-Los Angeles — Downtown Los Angeles, Pasadena, West Hollywood, West Los Angeles, South LA, Commerce/South Gate, East LA, San Fernando Valley, Long Beach, Santa Monica/Venice Beach and cities within North Orange County.
-New York City — Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island or Brooklyn
-San Francisco Bay Area — San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa or Marin counties
Additionally, applicants must:
-Be classified as a 501(c)(3), be under the fiscal sponsorship of a 501(c)(3), be a program of a 501(c)(3) -or- be a public school.
-Work within one of the Foundation’s issue areas
Taproot does not provide services to:
-Organizations that promote religious doctrine. (We may support agencies operated by religious organizations that serve secular needs.)
-Organizations that lack written policies about discrimination or have a track record of discriminating on the basis of age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, ethnicity, disability, national origin, political affiliation or religious belief.
The application deadlines to apply for a Taproot Team Projects are: February 1, April 1, June 1, August 1, October 1, December 1.
Occasionally, deadlines are extended, so Taproot recommends checking with your local office (below) for the exact deadline.
