In-kind grant valued up to $50,000 to a Texas nonprofit organization for contracting work to renovate a community space in inner-city Houston, such as a classroom, garden, playground, library, or performance space. Funding will be used to hire contractors for cosmetic repairs, such as ceiling, tile, or flooring, and minor electrical work. Volunteers help out with managing the overall project, designing the concept, painting, installing furniture and furnishings, etc. Funding is intended to give children, adults, and seniors a place to thrive, grow and learn.

Eligible spaces are not limited to classrooms, gardens, playgrounds, multi-use space, computer labs, libraries, and theaters. The span of the project may include painting walls, installing new floors, installing lighting fixtures, ceiling tiles, mural or art installation, new theater space, creative aging art space, installation of new books/computers/smart boards/desks and chairs/furniture, building gardens, improving playgrounds of all ages. Creative ideas are encouraged.

The winning applicant will get the opportunity to have a space of their choosing renovated in a project valued up to $50,000.

Term of Contract:

The planning/fundraising period will run through October 2019, and volunteer days/contractors on-site in November 2019.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Organizations must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that owns a space within the Houston city limits.

At this time, HIP does not do jobs that require permits with the City of Houston. During the renovation process, if major damage is found in the space (water/termite/mold/fire/wear and tear, etc.), it is the responsibility of the nonprofit to investigate and repair these areas.

This project cannot include kitchens, bathrooms, swimming pools, animal facilities and outdoor sports facilities. This also cannot be a rebuild of a completely or nearly demolished space or an empty or abandoned lot or building. Proposals requesting these facilities will automatically be disqualified.

Pre-Application Information:

Proposal and required attachments are due by April 30, 2019. The Partner will be selected in May 2019.
