Grants to USA, Canada, and International investigators for research projects that address the science of cat and dog health. All research projects should be humane and hypothesis-driven, demonstrating high scientific merit and potential impact on animal health.

All proposals relevant to the mission of the Foundation will be given equal consideration for funding. However, this year, The Foundation is particularly interested in proposals that address the following topics:

- Prevention, treatment and diagnosis of heartworm disease
- Genetics and epigenetics of health and disease
- Gut health and the association of microbiome with health outcomes

Proposals are being accepted for the following grant categories:

- The Established Investigator Grant is the most common grant, designed to provide funding for impactful research by individuals and teams with a previous record of research and publication.
- The Pilot Study Grant is designed to provide funding for innovative ideas to accelerate discovery and advance MAF’s mission.
- The First Award Grant is designed to assist new faculty in establishing a successful research program.
- The Fellowship Training Grant is designed to assist new investigators in launching a successful research career by providing salary support in a quality mentoring environment.

Estimated Size of Grant:

- Established Investigator Grant: There is no limit to the annual budget request, however the average award is
approximately $50,000/year. Expenses for PI to travel to scientific meetings are limited to $3,000.
- Pilot Study: The budget cannot exceed $10,800 ($10,000 plus 8 percent for indirect costs if charged by your institution).
- First Award Grant: Limited to $50,000 maximum per year (personnel and supplies), plus maximum of 8 percent indirect costs (maximum annual award $54,000). Equipment: $5,000; Expenses for PI to travel to scientific meetings are limited to $3,000.
- Fellowship Training Grant: Salary up to $50,000 per year (including benefits and indirect costs).

Term of Contract:

- The Established Investigator Grant is for a maximum of three years. All projects are subject to annual review, and approval of successive years is contingent upon approval of progress.
- The Pilot Study grant is for a maximum of one year.
- The First Award Grant is for a maximum of two years.
- The Fellowship Training Grant is for a maximum of two years.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Established Investigator Grant: These awards are for experienced researchers with a record of research publication.

The Pilot Study Grant: All investigators are eligible to apply, however, an individual can be the Principal Investigator on only one Pilot Study per year.

The First Award Grant: New faculty may apply for seed funding to establish a successful research program. To qualify, an applicant:
a. Must have a DVM and/or PhD and a full-time, permanent position in a university, accredited zoo or conservation organization. Individuals currently in a residency are not eligible for this award.
Postdoctoral researchers should be completing their program and proposing research intended to be conducted in a permanent full-time position.
b. Must not have received previous funding as a principal investigator for more than $20,000 for any single extramural award. Previous funding as a co-investigator is acceptable.
c. Must provide a letter documenting his or her full-time permanent status from the institution’s dean, department head or equivalent.
d. Must have the support of a faculty mentor in the applicant’s field.

The Fellowship Training Grant: These grants are intended for training opportunities that will produce biomedical scientists (veterinarian and/or PhD) committed to a career in companion animal and/or wildlife research. Applicants must have the following qualifications:
a. Applicants must have a DVM or PhD and be in a pre- or postdoctoral research program.
b. The applicant cannot have completed more than two (2) years of full-time postdoctoral research training on the proposed project.
c. Clinical residents and other applicants with clinical service requirements are not eligible.
d. Successful candidates should have completed the majority of coursework for their program and must devote at least 75 percent of their time to the funded research.
e. Applicants must prepare the proposal independently, with mentor input.

Pre-Application Information:

Applications are due by 11:59 PM EST on Wednesday, March 14, 2018.

Funding decisions will be made in mid-July 2018 with grant awards starting as early as August 1, 2018.

All funds must be in U.S. dollars.
