Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $1,000 and grants of up to $10,000 to Michigan nonprofit organizations, schools, faith-based organizations, and government agencies for projects to benefit local residents in eligible locations. Program focus areas include the arts, health, children, youth development and leadership, seniors, community improvement and special needs, education, and the environment. Funding is intended to benefit Berrien County.

The Berrien Community Foundation is most interested in funding Berrien County programs that:

  • Take an imaginative and innovative approach;
  • Focus on prevention;
  • Solve critical local problems or address critical local needs;
  • Can be sustained without continued funding from the community foundation;
  • Encourage collaboration and cooperation among charities and do not duplicate existing services;
  • Unite and build our communities behind a common goal;
  • Attract volunteer resources and support; and
  • Provide leverage for generating other funds or resources.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The maximum grant request is $10,000 for the "For Good" Major and $1,000 for the "For Good" Minor.

Term of Contract:

Project start dates should be at least 2 months after the application due date. For April application dates, the project start date should be June 1 or after and for August it should be October 1 or after.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

This grant opportunity is available to 501c3 nonprofit organizations, schools, religious organizations doing community work and government organizations who are serving Berrien County, Michigan.

Low priority is given to capital campaigns.

The Berrien Community Foundation typically does not fund:
- Annual fundraising campaigns;
- Routine operating expenses;
- Religious or sectarian purposes;
- Political purposes;
- Existing obligations or debts/liabilities;
- Grants to individuals;
- Endowment funds;
- Efforts that will require a commitment for long-term financial support; and
- Travel for groups such as school classes, clubs, or sports teams.

Pre-Application Information:

Application due date is February 24th.

An organization may receive one "For Good" Grant per calendar year. Organizations that have received an award for three calendar years in a row are required to take a year off from applying.
