Grants of up to $19,000 to Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania health information organizations for projects that foster a culture of health literacy. Applications are invited for projects that promote health information literacy within the health workforce and promote inter-professional health information literacy.
Description of Award:
The goal of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM) is to advance the progress of medicine, improve public health by providing U.S. health professionals with equal access to biomedical information, and improve individuals' access to information to enable them to make informed decisions about their health. The NNLM is vital in the National Library of Medicine (NLM) outreach efforts to health professionals and the public to increase awareness of, facilitate access to, and provide training in the use of NLM's web-based information resources
The purpose of the Health Literacy Project Award is to support projects that promote a culture of health literacy within the organization.
Awards to NNLM MAR members help achieve two National Network Performance Measures:
-Engage Network members in carrying out the mission of NNLM.
-Maintain a robust outreach and education program reaching the region’s communities and responsive to their needs.
Projects should embody the Ten Attributes of Health Literate Health Care Organizations. Examples of what may be done to achieve health literacy may be found from the CDC, as well as in the AHRQ Health Literacy Universal Precautions Toolkit.
-Promote health information literacy in health education targeting the future health professions workforce and in support of clinical decision making and/or patient education
-Encourage inter-professional health information literacy
Organizations and libraries can explore a variety of options for designing projects for this award such as holding workshops, inviting speakers, and/or conducting focused interviews of stakeholders. Projects must incorporate the use of National Library of Medicine resources appropriate for health information literacy for the target population(s) such as:
-MedlinePlus Easy to Read pages
-How to Write Easy-to-Read Health Materials
