Request a Grant Writer

Grants of $32,000 to Canada emerging filmmaking teams of writers, producers, and directors to finance the production of short 5-to-10 minute films. An additional $5,000 loan will be provided for development of the second draft of the feature film script. The short film must relate creatively to the feature film, which should be currently in development.

The Shorts-to-Features Program is designed to finance the production of short films from emerging Canadian filmmakers to use as a calling card for their first feature film currently in development, in addition to a commitment of a further amount to develop a second draft of their feature script.

With the exception of documentary all genres will be accepted.

Number of Grants:

The program is designed to finance the production of three short films and will award three prizes.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Program Highlights:

- Production financing in the amount of $32,000 per project
- Additional provincial financing is available from provincial agencies with complimentary programs
- Guaranteed script development support ($5,000) for the feature film version
- In-Kind production and marketing support available

Term of Contract:

Projects must go into production within six months of selection and must deliver their film within one year of selection.

The Fund will favour projects that can be realized as close to the financing supplied.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applications must come from filmmaking teams, writer/director/producer, all of whom must be Canadian (Canadian citizenship or Permanent Residents). The writer, producer and director must not have had a credit on a feature in one of these three disciplines. For example, if someone who has written or produced a feature film applies as a director, that project would not be eligible. Or someone who has directed a feature wants to apply as a writer, that project would be ineligible.

One person can fulfill more than one role, but single persons fulfilling all roles of writer/producer/director must have at least another dedicated producer on board in order to apply.

Eligible projects:

- Short film scripts 10 pages or under
- Writer, producer, director teams, each of whom have not had a feature film produced
- Writer, producer, director must be Canadian
- Projects must be in English
- Projects can come from anywhere within Canada
- All teams must submit a feature script (75pg -12opgs) which creatively relates to the short film
- Applicants may only be attached to one application

Projects must be short films between 5 and 10 mins, with intentions to be certified by Canadian content.

All filmmaking teams will be required to work with an executive producer (EP) who meets the Fund’s Script Development/Equity Investment Program eligibility criteria - an Executive Producer considered eligible to apply to regular Script Development Program or Equity Investment Program of the Harold Greenberg Fund. As per the guidelines, this person must be a Canadian and have produced at least one feature film within the last seven years. This individual will act as a mentor throughout the film’s production.
