Grants of up to $40,000 to Vermont individual farmers and farms to improve water-related infrastructure. Funding is intended to enhance water quality and to build, rehabilitate, or upgrade farm infrastructure that will positively impact water quality. Priority is given to livestock and dairy farms and to long-term investments.

Projects to make on-farm capital improvements that also have direct, positive impacts on water quality are eligible for funding. The following types of projects have been funded in the past:

  • Construction, renovation, or upgrades to farm infrastructure
  • Purchase of equipment that will be used frequently; is essential to the business; cannot be rented, and leads to innovative farm practices

For a table of eligible projects and costs, see:

Estimated Size of Grant:

Grants of $5,000 to $40,000 are available.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Eligible applicants:
- Any farm that is required to meet the Required Agricultural Practices and has gross sales of $15,000 per year or more is eligible to apply. Funds are awarded to commercial businesses; Early-stage or small-scale farm businesses on a growth trajectory if not yet commercially viable may be funded.
- Dairy and livestock farms are likely to be more competitive applicants. Produce farms will be eligible provided they can demonstrate that their project will have significant, positive impacts on water quality.
- Applicants can be organic or conventional and do not need to have conserved their land. Any size farm is welcome to apply. The review team will utilize this information to get a full picture of your farm business.

Examples of non-eligible costs:
- Annual practices or infrastructure that is short-lived
- Equipment that is used infrequently or that could very feasibly be rented or contracted
- Grant writing
- Soil or water quality analysis

Projects to build or repair farm vehicles or access roads are typically not successful in this grant program, as their impact on water quality is relatively lower than other proposals.

Pre-Application Information:

Applications submitted in advance of the following dates will be reviewed for funding:
- Friday, December 4, 2020 (decisions made by March 2020)
- Friday, March 26, 2021 (decisions made by May 2021)

All farmers should submit applications electronically as VHCB staff will be working remotely until further notice.
