Grants ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 to USA and Puerto Rico Latino individual artists, groups of artists, and organizations to promote social change through the arts. Funding is intended to support artists with the expenses associated with the creative process and for project-related expenses and general operating support for organizations.

NFA Objectives

  • Sustain the creation and presentation of works by Latino artists and arts organizations.
  • Build the capacity of Latino arts organizations and artists.
  • Support the creative expression of artists that exhibit a high level of artistic excellence and innovation.
  • Empower Latino artists and arts organizations in their efforts to promote social justice and social change
    through the arts.
  • Strengthen communities by investing in cultural assets and human and social capital of Latinos in the U.S. and Puerto Rico

NALAC Fund for the Arts - Artists/Ensembles supports the work of Latinx artists in all disciplines. Grant funds may be used to support any stage of the creative process, including but not limited to living wages, research, production, living expenses, documentation, evaluation, occupancy, travel, training.  The Artist Grant supports artists whose work demonstrates excellence and the potential for impacting the Latinx arts field.

  • The Adán Medrano Legacy Award in Film will support dynamic, Latinx cinema production by emerging filmmakers that contribute towards a deeper understanding of Latinx expression and identity. For the purposes of this grant, an “emerging filmmaker” is defined as someone who has a) completed at least one independent film or video work as a writer, director, producer or cinematographer and b) received basic training in the media arts. Training can be formal (college or university) or informal (production course, workshops, hands-on experience in media arts production, etc.). Filmmakers will have an opportunity to expand on why it is they consider themselves to be emerging.
  • The San Antonio Artist Grant supports the production of work that will be created and presented in City of San Antonio. Internet public presentations are acceptable. Minimum project budget must be at least $8,100.
  • The Puerto Rico Artist Grant supports the production of work that will be created and presented in Puerto Rico, in efforts to contribute to the restoration and sustainability efforts of artistic and cultural practices by artists residing on the island. Internet-based public presentations are acceptable.
  • The NALAC Pod Grant supports efforts to self-organize or mobilize the Latinx creative workforce around activities that encourage advocacy, network-building, refining leadership skills, sharpening critical thinking or promoting equity. NALAC alumni and active members are highly encouraged to apply to deepen NALAC networks in their geographic region. 

NALAC Fund for the Arts - Organizations supports project-related expenses or general operating support. 

NALAC Fund for the Arts - Puerto Rico Artist Grant supports the work of artists living in Puerto Rico working across all disciplines. Grant funds may be used to support any stage of the creative process, including but not limited to living wages, research, production, living expenses, documentation, evaluation, occupancy, travel, training.

- For the 14th cycle, the NFA offers five grant categories for artists and ensembles who meet the eligibility requirements outlined in the NFA guidelines: Artist Grant ($10,000), Adán Medrano Legacy Award in Film ($10,000), the San Antonio Artist Grant ($5,400), the Puerto Rico Artist Grant ($5,000) and the NALAC Pod Grant ($5,000).

- Grants range from $5,000 to $10,000.

NALAC Fund for the Arts - Puerto Rico Artist Grant
- For the 14th cycle, the NFA is doubling the size of the Puerto Rico Artist Grant from $2,500 to $5,000.

Term of Contract:

Proposed activities must take place between January 1, 2020 and January 1, 2021.

Artists/Ensembles Grant

- The Artist Grant is open to Latinx artists or ensembles based in the U.S. or Puerto Rico.
- The Adán Medrano Legacy Award in Film is open to emerging Latinx video/filmmakers based in the U.S. or Puerto Rico.
- The San Antonio Artist Grant is open to Latinx artists or ensembles with permanent residence of at least six months within the city limits of San Antonio, Texas.
- The Puerto Rico Artist Grant is open to artists with permanent residence of at least one-year in Puerto Rico.
- The Pod Grant is open to Latinx artists, cultural workers and collectives whose work centers around social, cultural or political advocacy and organizing.

Organizations Grant: U.S. or Puerto Rico-based organizations whose primary mission is focused on Latinx arts and culture. Applicant organizations must meet the following criteria:
- Must have a mission that is explicitly focused on Latino art and culture.
- Must be based in the United States or Puerto Rico.
- Must have an Executive or Artistic Director who is Latinx and/or a Board of Directors that is comprised of at least 51% Latinx individuals.
- Must have 501(c)(3) nonprofit status or have a fiscal sponsor with a 501(c)(3) status.
- Must have at least one full year of programming history.
- Must have organizational membership with NALAC (visit www.nalactienda.org to complete your membership).
- Must not have received funding from the NFA during the 13th grant cycle (2018 – 2019 funding year).
- Must have submitted all Final Reports for any previously awarded NFA grants.

Puerto Rico Artist Grant
- Latino or Puerto Rican artists currently residing on the island for a minimum of one year.

The following items are not eligible for support through the NALAC Fund for the Arts:
- Capital campaigns
- University or College projects, groups, departments or organizations. (ex. a student organization or art gallery that is part of an academic institution)
- Student work completed for academic credit or as part of an academically supported project, program or residency
- Retroactive funding (expenses before January 1st, 2020)
- Late applications submitted after the posted deadline.
- Applications that are incomplete or fail to adhere to the eligibility requirements listed in the guidelines will be marked as non-competitive and will not proceed to the next round of review.
