Grants of $1,000 and $2,000 and in-kind donations valued at $250 to eligible USA K-12 public, private, and charter schools for programs to start a new school garden or expand an existing school garden. Funding is intended for schools where at least 40% of the students qualify for reduced-price or free meals. Applicants must be planning a new garden or expanding an existing school garden program designed to teach students about environmental sustainability and the importance of biodiversity.

The Budding Botanist grant will help young citizens learn about plants, explore their world, and inspire them to take care of the life they discover in their local ecosystems.

Each grant recipient will receive a package of tools and educational materials valued at $250 along with a check for $2,000 or $1,000 to spend on the materials needed to install a new or expand an existing school garden.

In addition to an award package, the three schools that win the $2,250 prize will receive visits from KidsGardening and the Klorane Botanical Foundation at a garden celebration.

Term of Contract:

All funded gardens must be able to be installed by the end of the 2019-2020 school year.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Any public school, charter school or private school serving students in grades K to 12 in the United States that can demonstrate that at least 40% of their student population would qualify for free or reduced-price meals is eligible to apply. Applicants must be planning a new or expanding an existing school garden program designed to teach students about environmental sustainability and the importance of biodiversity.

Pre-Application Information:

Due Date: Applications are due November 8, 2019.

Winners will be notified via email by December 13, 2019. A list of winners will also be posted on on that date. Awards will be distributed in January 2020.

Award ceremonies will be planned and hosted by the school and staff of the Klorane Botanical Foundation and KidsGardening between the months of March and June of 2020.

Grant winners must be willing to host a garden celebration planned with the help of KidsGardening and the Klorane Botanical Foundation between March and June of 2019. Winners must be open to hosting guests from local media outlets at these events. They must also distribute and collect media release forms for all participating students. Information about the garden programs of grant recipients will be shared through images and videos digitally and through social media.
