Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $10,000 to Indiana nonprofit organizations, schools, libraries, community and faith-based organizations, and government agencies to promote the development of new humanities programs. Applicants must submit an Inquiry Form prior to applying. Funding is intended to support projects and activities that use cutting-edge approaches to help people consider new perspectives, learn new information, share ideas, and understand one another better. Programs should be open to the public, use the humanities as a tool for engagement, and/or reach underserved audiences.

Projects must contain a strong focus on the humanities, including activities in the following disciplines:

  • Literature
  • Language
  • History
  • Philosophy
  • Archaeology
  • Comparative religion
  • Law
  • Ethics
  • Theory, history, and criticism of the performing and visual arts
  • Social sciences that have humanistic content and/or humanistic method.

In addition, projects must:

  • Include innovative elements
  • Include humanities scholars in planning and implementation
  • Be intended for a public or school audience
  • Be presented at a site that is accessible according to the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Include a plan for execution

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for an Innovation Grant, you must apply on behalf of an Indiana-based tax-exempt organization. Schools, public libraries, churches, community organizations, and government entities are eligible. 501(c)3 status is not required.

Innovation Grants are not awarded to individuals.

An organization cannot receive more than one Innovation Grant per calendar year.

Indiana Humanities will not award grants for the following:
- Political action or advocacy
- Religious practices or training
- Creation or performances of art
- Social services
- Scholarships or prizes
- Construction or renovation
- Property or major equipment purchases. Funding may be considered for equipment, however, if it is a portion of the grant request and will support the overall goal of providing public humanities programming.
- Publication of books
- Operating expenses
- Alcoholic beverages
- Entertainment, unless it's a key educational component of the program.

If you're interested in applying for an Innovation Grant, please review the grant guidelines then complete the Inquiry Form. An Indiana Humanities staff member will review the form and will contact you either via phone or email to acknowledge its receipt and possibly to ask for additional information and/or provide guidance. If the staff member feels that your project aligns with the goals of the Innovation Grant, he or she will ask you to submit a full proposal. If you're invited to apply, you must do so using Indiana Humanities' online application system.

The Fund is available to support you as you prepare your inquiry form and application, and encourages you to reach out if you have questions or concerns about whether your idea aligns with the goals of the Innovation Grant. This grant requires at least a 50% cash/in-kind match. Matching funds must come from non-federal sources and ideally will demonstrate a level of community support for the project.

The review process will take approximately six weeks.
