Grants of up to $25,000 to USA, Canada, and International public, private, nonprofit, and for-profit organizations for research on responsible gambling, with a focus on lottery usage. Eligible projects must have clear relevance to the State of Indiana and/or its lottery program. The funding source seeks proposals that demonstrate high scientific merit from investigators who show promise of disseminating their work at high-impact conferences and in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Research projects may include, but are not limited to: 

  • Stand-alone research projects or a pilot project; 
  • Preliminary research in preparation for a large research project, such as a comprehensive literature review, or instrument development and testing; and 
  • Research tasks subsequent to a full research project, such as follow-up testing.

Research Priorities:

  • Examining strategies that promote the responsible gaming principles of positive play, harm minimization, and treatment referral for lottery players.
  • Identifying the positive or negative factors that influence behaviors and beliefs among lottery players who may be at risk for problem gambling.
  • Determining innovative methods to reach and connect lottery players with educational resources or treatment providers.
  • Understanding the role technology plays in the promotion of positive play attributes or treatment of problem gambling among lottery players.

Proposals should have a clear relevance to the State of Indiana and/or Hoosier Lottery. This may include, but is not limited to:

  • Including Indiana residents in sampling
  • Using Hoosier Lottery data, tools, or publications
  • Using statistics, data, or demographic studies specific to Indiana’s population

Estimated Size of Grant:

Applicants may request up to $25,000 in direct costs and up to $5,000 in Facilities and Administration costs.

Term of Contract:

Projects may begin Dec. 1, 2019, and conclude no later than within one year.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Domestic or international, public or private, non-profit or for-profit organizations are eligible to apply for NCRG funding. The Principal Investigator must have a PhD, MD, or other terminal degree. The NCRG encourages early career investigators to apply. Employees of the Hoosier Lottery are not eligible to apply.

Funding will not be provided for the following:

- Administrative personnel
- Stipends
- Office equipment and furniture
- Tuition
- Dues and membership fees
- Maintenance/service contracts
- Construction, alteration, maintenance or rental of buildings or building space
- Recruiting/relocation expenses
- Entertainment/social expenses
- Pre-award costs

Pre-Application Information:

Applications should be uploaded to the NCRG Review Express website by 5 p.m. (Eastern) on Nov. 15, 2019. The original hardcopy should be mailed as well, postmarked no later than the deadline date.
