Grants to Washington nonprofit organizations in eligible locations working to support and strengthen the organizational capacity of organizations that are led by Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) individuals. The purpose of this program is to support local BIPOC-led organizations that are impacted by systemic and institutional racism, marginalized and burdened by significant economic, educational, health, and social disparities. Eligible applicants are capacity-building intermediary organizations that provide programs that support BIPOC-led nonprofit organizations in the greater Seattle area.

Seattle Foundation is committed to nonprofit effectiveness, and the overall health of the sector. The Foundation funds local capacity building intermediary organizations and support their knowledge, connections, networks, and expertise. Through the intermediaries, the Foundation seeks to ensure that nonprofit organizations are supported in ways that enable them to more effectively meet their missions and enhance their impact. Seattle Foundation recognizes that historic and ongoing underinvestment in communities of color and other marginalized communities has contributed to current inequitable conditions.

With this Request for Proposal (RFP) Seattle Foundation is prioritizing grant investments in local capacity building intermediaries that have deep experience with providing programs that increase the effectiveness and stability of Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) led organizations. The Foundation is looking to fund programs that build and strengthen the systems, structures, cultures, skills, connections, resources, and power that organizations need to serve their communities. The Foundation seeks programs that support the growth, self-determination, and resiliency of BIPOC-led nonprofits by creating the conditions for organizations to thrive. The Foundation will make grant investments that align with its work to advance racial and economic equity and support communities that face the greatest disparities.

Funding will be awarded to capacity building intermediary organizations based on the following criteria:
  • Demonstrated expertise in providing culturally and linguistically responsive capacity building programming to BIPOC-led organizations.
  • BIPOC-led nonprofit organizations comprise a high percentage of program participants.
  • Has trusted relationships within BIPOC communities and is well-positioned to collaborate, engage and partner.
  • Evaluates capacity building programs outcomes and modifies programming based on lessons learned.
  • Has a diverse staff and board representative of impacted communities and an organizational commitment to advancing racial and economic equity.

Seattle Foundation anticipates the average grant size to be $50,000.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Seattle Foundation grant cycles are open to eligible local nonprofits. Nonprofit Effectiveness program will invest in capacity building organizations providing programs that support BIPOC-led nonprofit organizations.

Pre-Application Information:

Proposals are due by Friday, October 16, 2020 at 5 P.M. (PST).

Grantees will be announced in December 2020.
