Grants to Louisiana nonprofit cultural organizations for emergency assistance to mitigate the adverse financial effects of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. Funding is intended to support organizations with a strong focus on the humanities by assisting with organizational expenses, rental payments, utilities, mortgage payments, payroll, and employee benefits.

In an effort to help protect Louisiana’s critical cultural institutions, the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities has launched the Louisiana Culture Care Fund, a new grant program providing emergency relief funding to humanities organizations impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NEH defines the humanities as including the fields of history, philosophy, literature, foreign languages, linguistics, comparative religion, ethics, archaeology, jurisprudence, art history, theory and criticism and philosophical and historical approaches to social sciences.

Applicant organizations will describe ways in which they have been affected by the economic impact of COVID-19. This may include, for example, lost revenue due to canceled programs; lost space due to inability to pay rent, mortgage, or utilities; staff layoff due to inability to cover payroll expenses; or permanent closure.

Awards are designated for operational expenses, including but not limited to staff retention (payroll and benefits), rent, mortgage, and utilities.

All Louisiana Culture Care Fund applications will be subject to the same review process based on the following criteria:

  • Record of strong humanities programming (see below)
  • Estimated annual audience
  • Organization size (based on annual operating budget)
  • Geographic location and distribution (rural, underserved areas of Louisiana)
  • Preference will be given to organizations who have not received funds from the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) but receipt of PPP funds does not disqualify organizations from applying for support from the Louisiana Culture Care Fund.
