Grants and in-kind assistance to Maine nonprofits serving communities of color for professional development activities. The purpose of the program is to provide managerial training to leaders of color at organizations that promote racial equity. Grants will be made to the nonprofit leaders' organizations across the State. Priority will be given to leaders from organizations led by people of color.

Investing in Leaders of Color supports nonprofit leaders of color and their organizations. The program provides one-on-one coaching, a stipend for professional development and operating costs, and networking opportunities.

This program provides a capacity-building grant per organization/leader, which consist of the following components:

  • One-on-one coaching 
    • Each leader is eligible for up to 23 hours of coaching at a rate of $150/hr. The leader’s organization will be paid for their participation in this program at the same hourly rate as coaches.
  • Professional development, including but not limited to:
    • Conferences, workshops, and/or trainings (including travel, accommodations, and meals)
    • Tuition assistance
    • Professional membership fees
  • Operating costs, including but not limited to:
    • Technology (e.g., computer, laptop, tablets, smartphones, AV equipment)
    • New software
    • Books, literature, professional journals.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The maximum grant awarded through the ILOC program is $6,950. The grant is awarded to the leader’s organization. Here is the breakdown of maximum funding available by category:
- $3,450 for one-on-one coaching
- $2,000 for professional development, including but not limited to:
- $1,500 for operating costs, including but not limited to:

Term of Contract:

Leaders must be available for one-on-one coaching and professional development within a one-year time frame.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Who is eligible to apply:
- Nonprofit, charitable organizations tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and also classified as an organization described in sections 509(a)(1) or 509(a)(2)
- Municipalities
- Public schools
- Public agencies working for the State of Maine
- Indian tribal governments (or political subdivisions) recognized by the Department of the Interior
- Groups without any tax status may apply with a fiscal sponsor that is an eligible organization as described above.

In addition, please note that:
- Applicant organizations must serve communities of color.
- Applicant organizations must promote racial equity.
- Leaders must be a person of color in a leadership role at a nonprofit organization in the state of Maine.
- Leaders must be available for one-on-one coaching and professional development within a one-year time frame.

What is not funded, without exception:
- Expenses already incurred
- Regranting to a secondary grantee through a competitive process
- Political campaigns
- Lobbying in the form of calls to action on a specific vote
- Religious activities: including, but not limited to, religious services, promotion of religious beliefs, or activities that are restricted to church or religious group membership.

Deadline: September 15, 11:59 PM - late applications will not be accepted
Notification: By December 15

- All applicants receive a letter through regular mail notifying them if their request has been funded or declined. If there is an award, a check will accompany the letter.
- If an applicant has a fiscal sponsor, the check will be sent to the fiscal sponsor and a copy of the award letter will go to the applicant.

Any eligible organization may submit one application per grant program, regardless of previous application history or current award progress.

Requests should be for future expenses only. Because proposals take 10-12 weeks to process, plan the project start date accordingly.

Requests should not exceed the maximum award for each individual grant program.
