Request a Grant Writer

Grants to California nonprofit organizations in eligible locations to promote literacy and support programs that benefit children in preschool through third grade. Funding is intended to support educational projects and activities that help children to acquire reading, writing, and comprehension skills, and to apply literacy skills to critical thinking and self-expression. Eligible applicants serve residents in Marin and San Francisco counties.

Eligible programs:

  • Programs that are entirely dedicated to early literacy programming, with strong evaluation methods in place and a proven record of effectiveness. Requests may be for general or program support OR
  • Programs that are community-based and infuse literacy into in-school and/or out-of-school programs, with a particular focus on students facing adversity (e.g. English Language Learners). Requests may be for specific program support, to strengthen evaluation methods, and/or for projects designed to build collaboration with other literacy programs.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Eligible applicants serve at-promise students from preschool through third grade in Marin and San Francisco counties. The Foundation awards grants to public charities operating under an IRS 501(c)(3) status or fiscally sponsored by a 501(c)(3) organization.

The Foundation only supports non-sectarian programs.

The Foundation does not
- Award grants to individuals.
- Make grants to endowments, events, annual appeals, videos, medical research, capital campaigns, and conferences

Pre-Application Information:

2021 submission windows are as follows:

- January 18 – February 1, 2021, with grant decisions made in April 2021
- June 14 – 25, 2021, with grant decisions made in October 2021

Applications are due by 5:00 pm PST on the final day of the submission window.

Only one request from an organization will be funded in a 12-month period.
