Grants to Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC nonprofit organizations in eligible regions for organizational support. Funding is intended to support Black-led organizations working toward institutional change and social justice. Eligible organizations are those that serve the Greater Washington area.

The Community Foundation is seeking to provide funding to Black-led organizations in the Greater Washington region, working in the critical area of Systems Change, with grants to help address immediate infrastructure organizational needs (i.e., human resources, marketing/communications, technology, financial systems, board development, leadership/staff development, etc.).

There are various ways and approaches to transform and disrupt systems. For this specific grant opportunity, the Foundation is looking to support organizations who implement at least one of the following:

  • Policy advocacy (local or national)
  • Community and cultural organizing
  • Power/base/movement building
  • Civic engagement and activism

The Community Foundation is offering one-year grants.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Grants will be awarded to select organizations that meet the following minimum eligibility
- The applicant (defined as the agency that will receive the grant agreement and funds, if awarded) must have current status as a 501(c)(3) public charity designation. Organizations that have not yet received a 501(c)(3) designation must have a fiscal sponsor to serve as the applicant who meets all eligibility requirements at the time of submission.
- The organization must not be listed on the Office of Foreign Assets Control Specially Designated Nationals or the Southern Poverty Law Center Hate Group lists.
- Organizations must be either based in or primarily implementing in the Greater Washington Region, which includes, The District of Columbia, Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties in Maryland and Northern Virginia.
- Organizations with annual operating budgets of $100,000 or greater.
- The applicant must be Black-led and working to address systems change as defined above.
- If previous funding has been received from The Community Foundation, the applicant must be current in reporting to The Community Foundation as specified in the grant agreement.

Black-led is defined as the following:
- The executive director, highest-paid staff or the equivalent identify as a Black person
- At least 66% of the staff identify as Black
- At least 51% of the board or other leadership body and volunteers in leadership positions identify as Black
- Organizations who authentically and intentionally center and value Black diversity, voice, and experience.

A pre-proposal webinar information session will be held to review the RFP Guidelines and online application system on April 29,2021 at 10 a.m. Pre-registration is required.
