Artist Grants to Train Apprentices + 3 Maine Arts Grants

Art has a huge impact on people, culture and communities and is a place many of us turn to for beauty, solace and joy. And there is such a range of art forms that there really is something for everyone. In difficult times, people often find comfort in traditional art forms that are tied to the region they live in or a familiar history. Now there are several artist grants in Maine to help individual artists.

In fact, traditional art forms often serve as a bridge from the past to the present. These kinds of art forms came out of long-held traditions and are often passed down from one generation to the next. They cover a wide range of forms, and many who practice their traditional art form become masters, ready to instruct new artists in their form.

Grants for Maine Artists To Train in Traditional Art Forms

Now, grants of up $3,000 are available to master artists in Maine to train apprentices in a traditional art form. The Maine Arts Commission is offering the Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grant “to help communities sustain their cultural heritage by providing an opportunity for master traditional artists to pass on their skills to a qualified apprentice or apprentices.”

Here’s how the artist grant works: Master artists select an apprentice to teach one-on-one for a lengthy period of time, usually for a year. The grants are there to cover teaching fees, supplies and travel costs. The Commission is especially – but not only – interested in apprentices who are members of the same ethnic, religious, occupational, tribal or familial group as the master artist.
