Dept of Education Opens Grant Programs to Expand STEM at HBCU’s MSIs

U.S Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVoss has announced new grant funds aimed at expanding access to STEM at Historically Black Colleges (HBCUs) and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs).

According to the Secretary DeVoss:

All too often, minority students lack access to STEM education and are underrepresented in STEM jobs. That’s why this grant program is so important. It provides HBCUs and other MSIs the opportunity to expand and enhance their STEM offerings so their students can be prepared for the science and technology jobs of today and tomorrow.”

This grant is being awarded as part of the U.S Department of Education’s  Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program (MSEIP). This program functions to “assist predominantly minority institutions in effecting long-range improvement in science and engineering education programs and increasing the flow of underrepresented ethnic minorities, particularly minority women, into science and engineering careers.”

According to the Department of Education’s press release, this award is part of the administration’s goal of fully-funding HBCU’s and increasing investment into these institutions. Previous to this, the Department of Education showed support to The FUTURE ACT. The goal of this program is to permanently provide more than $250 million a year to HBCUs and other MSI. In addition, the Department of Education together with other federal agencies if focused on increasing investment to HBCUs and MSI by encouraging private-public partnerships together with businesses and organizations in their communities, which would have money flowing back into those communities as well.
